JOB SUMMARY:

The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a non-profit, bipartisan public policy organization established in 1962 to provide strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decision makers concerned with global security and prosperity. Over the years, it has grown to be one of the largest organizations of its kind, with a staff of some 200 employees, including more than 120 analysts working to address the changing dynamics of international security across the globe.

The Humanitarian Agenda utilizes analytic publications, private roundtables and meetings, public events, innovative digital programming, and day-long conferences to inform and influence policy on humanitarian issues. It brings together policymakers, practitioners, the private sector, and academics to discuss challenges for humanitarian action and propose solutions. The ultimate purpose of the Humanitarian Agenda’s work is to increase awareness of the challenges in humanitarian action and evolutions in humanitarian action to inform U.S. government strategic planning and policies to reduce humanitarian suffering and prevent the emergence of future crises.

The Humanitarian Agenda is seeking one full-time intern who can support day-to-day operations, including outreach efforts, event planning, and other administrative assistance. This is an in-person position during the period from January–June 2024 at the CSIS headquarters in Washington, D.C.

The ideal candidate is highly motivated, detail-oriented, and methodical, and possesses general knowledge about the humanitarian sector. Candidates must communicate why they are interested in the CSIS Humanitarian Agenda program and explain at least one area of interest in a cover letter (one page maximum). Interests can be demonstrated through previous administrative, research, academic, volunteer, or field experiences.

The hired candidate will be paid hourly, commensurate with experience ($17.00/hour for current undergraduate hires, $18.00/hour for hires with a bachelor’s degree, and $19.00/hour for hires with a master’s degree).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the following:

Responsibilities include understanding the organization’s cost structure and advising departments/programs on developing and managing proposals and project budgets. In addition, will provide analysis to Management on budget performance and forecasts, including but not limited to the following:

Administrative (70%)

• Assist in event logistics for meetings, conferences, seminars, and briefings
• Draft external correspondence and communications
• Assist with outreach activities and contact management
• Support the coordination of day-to-day office operations
• Provide background research and fact checking
• And support other administrative duties as needed

Social Media (30%)

• Update web and social media content
• Publicize the program’s publications and events across social media platforms (i.e., Twitter and Linkedin)
• Draft mailings and newsletters
• And support other social media duties as needed

Additional responsibilities include federal and donor financial reporting, preparing invoices for federal and private contracts, and preparing internal forecasts including but not limited to the following:

• Prepare and submit interim and final federal grant and donor financial reporting.
• Prepare, submit and record monthly and/or quarterly federal and private contract billings in accounting system (MS Dynamics SL) and CRM (Salesforce).
• Prepare, update, and distribute monthly program forecast.

KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:

Required qualifications:

• B.A./B.S. from an accredited U.S. institution or equivalent from a non-U.S. institution is required
• Strong academic record with a demonstrated interest in the humanitarian sector is required
• Strong professional communication and interpersonal skills with a range of diverse individuals are required
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively, manage multiple assignments under deadlines, and communicate effectively are required
• Proficiency in Microsoft word and excel is required
• Program support and event planning experience are desired. This experience can be demonstrated in clubs and activities at the candidate’s undergraduate or graduate institution
• Experience with social media (i.e., Twitter/X and Linkedin) in a professional or academic setting is desired
• Must be able to commit 35 hours per week
• And must be eligible to work in the United States
