Our team and mission

This position is based at the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) – Noordwijk, Netherlands

Under the Human and Robotic Exploration Programmes, the Studies and Technology (ExPeRT) Team shall:

  • Plan and implement – to schedule and budget – preparatory mission concepts, system studies and technology development activities funded by the E3P for all ESA exploration destinations, including LEO, Cis-lunar space, Moon, Mars and other exploration destination as may be defined;
  • Manage to completion all legacy/ongoing technology and study activities and incorporate their outcomes into future technology planning and implementation;
  • Coordinate with the HRE Operations Architect, and dedicated Directorate of Operations support where necessary, the development of the operations architecture for all HRE missions during the conceptual definition phase;
  • Lead the development of Spaceships and similar low TRL technology development initiatives;
  • Act as a point of contact for technology preparation for the Directorate and for any matters related to ESA’s Discovery, Preparation and Technology Development Programme (DPTP) and General Support Technology Programme (GSTP);
  • Coordinate in close interaction with Directorate of Technology technology studies related to Exploration through the TECNET fora;
  • Prepare and maintain a compendium of technologies for exploration;

Field(s) of activity for the internship

Topic: Exploration Technologies

ExPeRT is in charge of the identification and development of critical technologies for Human and Robotic Exploration mission in collaboration with other directorates. Regular activities of ExPeRT is the definition of user needs and related mission and technology requirements, scoping of technology activities, coordination of technology research and development, activities portfolio monitoring, technologies database maintenance and compendium of technologies activities for Exploration, and definition/maintenance of roadmaps for future technologies (in coordination with Directorate of Technology and external working groups).

You will be involved in the definition and implementation of technologies coordination for the three Exploration destinations: LEO, Moon and Mars.

Education

You must have student status and be enrolled at university for the entire duration of the internship. You should preferably be in your final or second to last year of a university course at master’s level in a technical or scientific discipline.

Additional requirements

The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.

Additional Requirements:

  • Knowledge in (some) Technologies for Exploration (e.g. Power, Communications, Robotics, Life Support Systems)
  • Knowledge in technology database tools (e.g. Visual Basic Applications on Microsoft Excel)
