Our team and mission

This position is based at the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) – Noordwijk, Netherlands

Under the direct authority of the Satellites Programmes Department, the GEO Satellites Programme is responsible for:

  • The initiation of new GEO Satellite Partnership Projects in close coordination with the Future Programmes Division;
  • The Management of all satellite projects assigned to the office within the department. The projects currently assigned to this position are NEOSAT platform product lines and associated first missions, Eutelsat Quantum satellite, Novacom I, Novacom II and HummingSat; this list may be amended in the future;
  • The Management of the Moonlight LCNS Space Segment, as delegated function integrated within the Moonlight Programme Office resident at ECSAT;
  • The Management of National RRF satellite projects, CubeSats and HAIT;
  • The coordination of functional and integrated support provided by other ESA Directorates and ESA Security Office in collaboration with the Business Control and Programme Management Support Office.

Field(s) of activity for the internship

Topic: Cubesat projects

The seven CubeSat missions will demonstrate Greece’s capability to host multiple payloads in response to European and national needs. The missions primarily focus on secure connectivity, while also providing multipurpose services such as telecommunications and Earth observation. Most of them will use optical ground stations in Greece to track and communicate with the satellites.

Development is well underway, with design reviews due to be held over the summer and the final acceptance review prior to launch due within 18 months.

The CubeSat projects represent the first part of ESA’s Greek Connect Programme (Telecom part), which will include also the setup of a state-of-the-art assembly integration and testing facility and upgrades of existing optical ground and radio-frequency tracking stations in Greece.

As an intern, you will be an active member of the cubesat teams and will have to support the Principal System Engineer on system engineering tasks and more specifically on EO payloads development and EO payloads AIT/AIV activities.

The duration is about 6 months

Education

You must have student status and be enrolled at university for the entire duration of the internship. You should preferably be in your final or second to last year of a university course at master’s level in a technical or scientific discipline.

Additional requirements

The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.
