JOB DETAIL

Job Summary:

The Communication and Public Affairs Division of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) seeks a part time intern to provide research support to the Knowledge Management team. The internship provides the opportunity to develop the following skills within the context of an international research and development organization:

  • Metadata curation
  • Library and repository organization
  • Archival collection management

This is a three-month internship based in Washington DC. Working hours are between 10 AM to 5 PM.

Essential Duties:

  • Curate metadata in Excel and data cleaning software (such as Open Refine)
  • Assign keywords using controlled vocabularies derived from thesaurus (AGROVOC)
  • Liaise with IFPRI staff to coordinate upload of metadata to new shared repository, CGSpace (based on DSpace)
  • Track the time spent to curate and migrate the metadata
  • Other tasks as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • Currently completing a degree from an accredited library and/or information science program
  • Experience in library cataloging
  • Familiarity with metadata common standards and common technologies used in the field such as: Dublin Core, MODS, XML, OAI-PMH, etc.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize work responsibly with minimal supervision
  • Demonstrated ability to pay attention to details
  • Excellent oral and written English language skills
  • Experience with data cleaning software
  • Experience writing scripts using common languages like Python, Perl, and others
  • Experience working with international and national organization

Physical Demand and Environment:

  • Employee will sit in an upright position for a long period of time
  • Employee will lift between 0-10 pounds.
  • Employee is required to have close visual acuity to perform activities such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing computer terminal; extensive reading.
