Duties and Responsibilities
Org. Setting and Reporting The internship is in the Bangkok Liaison Office, Southeast Asia Team, Asia and the Pacific Division, Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs – Department of Peace Operations (DPPA-DPO). The Office is hosted by the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) in Bangkok. The internship is for three to six months depending on host office needs and candidate availability. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (37.5 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the office. The office’s work includes: monitoring, research, and analysis of political developments in South and Southeast Asia; inter-agency coordination; delivery of advisory services; and organization of regional dialogues. The earliest starting date is 1 March. Preference will be given to applicants who can commit for longer assignments. Responsibilities – Research on regional peace and security issues; – Media monitoring; – Analysis of current events and thematic issues; – Drafting background documents; – Note-taking in meetings and workshops; – Organization of workshops and other events; etc.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme, and 1) shall be computer literate in standard software applications; 2) have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; 3) have demonstrated the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views; and 4) familiar with quantitative analysis will be an advantage. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work. experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Applicants must have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams Ability to draft news articles and/or social media posts in desirable. Ability to design surveys and polls is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
