Org. Setting and Reporting
This internship is located in the United Nations Liaison Office for Peace and Security (UNLOPS) in Brussels, linked to the Division for Policy, Evaluation and Training (DPET) in the Department of Peace Operations (DPO) at United Nations Headquarters in New York.
DPO was established to provide political and executive direction to UN peacekeeping operations around the world and maintains contact with the Security Council, troop and financial contributors, and parties to the conflict in the implementation of Security Council mandates.
UNLOPS is responsible for building the UN partnership with the EU and NATO on matters relating to peacekeeping and crisis management and UN-EU partnership on peace and security more broadly.
The Intern reports to the UNLOPS Head of Office.
This internship is UNPAID and is designed to be in person and full-time (35 hours per week). It can be adapted for remote and/or part-time (20 hours per week) upon request.
The full-time internship is for an initial period of two months and a part-time internship is for an initial of four months. Internships may be extended up to maximum six months depending on the needs of the Division.
Responsibilities
The intern will carry out the following responsibilities
o Undertake research on the potential for UN-EU partnership on the climate-security nexus.
o Monitor and report on EU and NATO policies, initiatives and processes relevant to the peacekeeping partnership with the UN.
o Support the drafting of reports, background briefs, talking points, correspondence, speeches and other communications products as required by UN HQ.
o Provide information, guidance and analysis, and respond to requests from Headquarters and the field relating to EU crisis management and related procedures.
o Provide background information, logistics and representational support to UN HQ senior staff visiting Brussels as required.
o Represent the UN in meetings or other fora as requested

Education
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following
conditions must be met:
1.Applicants at the time of application must meet one of the following requirements:
(a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree
or equivalent, or higher).
Work Experience
No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.
The field of study must be closely related to the type of internship you are applying for. For this particular internship course work in European and international public policy, international law, international relations or a related field is desirable.
Proficient in standard word processing and software applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint or similar and use of standard office automation equipment, scanner, printer, etc. is required.
Demonstrating a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and having a personal commitment to the ideals of the United Nations Charter is desirable.
Demonstrating the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views, is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
