This internship is located in the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) Knowledge Management and Strategic Support Section (KMSSS) of the UNOCT Policy, Knowledge Management and Coordination Branch (PKMCB), and is offered both in-person at the United Nations Headquarters in New York and remotely. Successful applicants will be assigned to one of KMSSS unit responsible for knowledge management or strategic support.
PKMCB is responsible for: providing strategic counter-terrorism policy advice and analysis on country/regional engagement and key thematic issues; drafting and coordinating the preparation of reports of the Secretary-General on counter-terrorism, as mandated by the General Assembly and the Security Council; promoting coordination and coherence in the counter-terrorism and PVE work of the United Nations system; developing and strengthening relations with Member States, and partnerships with international, regional and sub-regional organizations, including civil society organizations; supporting relevant intergovernmental processes as mandated, including the biennial review of the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy; and supporting the conceptualization, planning and organization of major UNOCT policy events.
KMSSS supports the overarching aims of PKMCB in providing policy leadership on the counter-terrorism and prevention of violent extremism (CT/PVE) mandates entrusted by the General Assembly and the Security Council to the Secretary-General, as well as enhancing coordination and coherence on CT/PVE to the UN system. The Branch responds to the Office’s Strategic Goal 1 to Foster further unity and collaboration within the United Nations against terrorism by working to foster common and united positions on terrorist threats, across Member States, United Nations entities, civil society and other key stakeholders.
This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the policy leadership functions of the Office of Counter-Terrorism to the United Nations system.
The Intern reports to a Political Affairs Officer, under overall guidance from the Senior Political Affairs Officer and Chief of the Section.
The internship is UNPAID and may be either full-time or part-time. It should be noted that full-time internship working hours are 35 hours per week, while part-time internship working hours are 20 hours per week. The internship will be undertaken either remotely outside the duty station or in a hybrid working arrangement at the UN Premise, New York, United States.
UNOCT was established to: (a) provide leadership on the General Assembly counter-terrorism mandates entrusted to the Secretary-General from across the United Nations system; (b) enhance coordination and coherence across United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Coordination Compact (former CTITF) entities to ensure the balanced implementation of the four pillars of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy; (c) strengthen the delivery of United Nations counter-terrorism capacity-building assistance to Member States; (d) improve visibility, advocacy and resource mobilization for United Nations counter-terrorism efforts; and (e) ensure that due priority is given to counterterrorism across the United Nations system and that the important work on preventing violent extremism is firmly rooted in the Strategy.
Responsibilities
The intern is expected to work five days per week, full time from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. within the Office of Counter-Terrorism, carrying out his/her tasks under the supervision of a staff member – the supervisor. Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background, the department to which he/she is assigned and the period during which he/she will undertake the internship.
The intern is expected to perform various activities and will work on policy matters related to preventing and countering terrorism and violent extremism conducive to terrorism while experience in data management and knowlecge management is highly desirable for this position. Tasks include:
• Assist in the development of knowledge management products.
• Gathers, selects and analyses information contained in communications and publications received from different sources, including the press.
• Assist in data collection and conduct research and provide analysis on relevant topics
• Keeps abreast of latest trends and developments in the area of assignment and in particular in the field of data management and knowledge management.
• Assist in developing and maintaining databases.
• Assist in drafting and preparing background documents, reports, issue briefs, talking points, articles, presentations, slide decks, etc.
• Attend and summarize conferences and meetings.
• Support the review of key reports and publications.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Education
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following
conditions must be met:
1.Applicants at the time of application must meet one of the following requirements:
(a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree
or equivalent, or higher); or,
(b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree
programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent)
2.The field of study must be closely related to the type of internship you are applying for.
3. Proficient in standard word processing and software applications such as Microsoft Word,
Excel and PowerPoint or similar; Be proficient in standard office automation equipment,
scanner, printer, etc.).
4.Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal
commitment to the ideals of the United Nations Charter.
5.Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural
backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of
differing opinions and views.
Work Experience
No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional UN language is an asset. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
