Duties and Responsibilities
Created in December 1999, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the designated focal point in the United Nations system for the coordination of efforts to reduce disasters and to ensure synergies among the disaster reduction activities of the United Nations and regional organizations and activities in both developed and less developed countries. Led by the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG), UNDRR has over 140 staff located in its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and in regional offices. Specifically, UNDRR guides, monitors, analyses and reports on progress in the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, supports regional and national implementation of the Framework and catalyzes action and increases global awareness to reduce disaster risk working with UN Member States and a broad range of partners and stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector, parliamentarians and the science and technology community. Based in Incheon, the Republic of Korea, UNDRR Global Education and Training Institute (GETI) was established in 2010 to develop a new cadre of professionals in disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation to build disaster resilient societies. UNDRR GETI is also the global secretariat of the Making Cities Resilient 2030 (MCR2030). MCR2030 provides a clear 3-stage Resilience Roadmap guiding cities and municipalities towards taking a long-term and continuous approach to resilience investments, from awareness raising to enhanced strategic planning and taking a whole-of-society approach to implementation. MCR2030 aims to create access for local governments to many services and expertise available by urban resilience partners globally and serve as a vehicle for localization of national disaster risk reduction and resilience agenda. This internship is located in the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), Global Education and Training Institute (GETI) based in Incheon, Republic of Korea. The Intern reports to Programme Management Officer, Capacity Development Section of GETI. The intern will support the team in its capacity building programmes and technical support on urban disaster risk reduction and resilience in connection with MCR2030. Tasks will include: • Perform internet-based research and collect information on good practices and case studies, latest research findings especially on urban disaster and climate resilience; • Assist in the development, maintenance and update of UNDRR’s urban disaster resilience toolkits including the Disaster Resilience Scorecard for Cities, its addenda and all accompanying Excel Tools; • Support the preparation, coordination and delivery of capacity development training workshops for government officials and partners especially on urban resilience and disaster risk reduction; • Support the development of relevant publications and write-up of news article and newsletter; • Assist in drafting and preparing background documents, concept notes, reports, and presentations; • Collect disaggregated data on training participants, analyze training evaluation survey and prepare training reports; • Other tasks as assigned. The internship is for a minimum of two (2) months and a maximum of 6 months depending on the needs of the office and is designed to be full time and in person between May and December 2024. The internship is UNPAID and fulltime. Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the to which they are assigned.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme. Do you meet any of the above criteria? If yes, please indicate which one and attach proof to the application. Applicants must have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and MS Teams. • Intermediate to advance skills in MS Excel is an advantage; • Skills in design software such as Canva and Adobe InDesign is an advantage; Applicants must have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter Applicants must have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for this internship. Any level of knowledge of an additional official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish), Korean and/or Mongolian is an asset.
