This internship position is located in the Outreach Unit of United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS), Office of Rule of Law and Security Institutions (OROLSI) within the Department of Peace Operations (DPO) in New York.

Established in 1997, the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) works to eliminate the threat posed by mines, explosive remnants of war and improvised explosive devices by coordinating United Nations mine action, leading operational responses at the country level, and supporting the development of standards, policies and norms.

As a specialized service of the United Nations located within the Department of Peace Operations, UNMAS operates under UN legislative mandates of both the General Assembly and the Security Council. UNMAS also responds to specific requests for support from the UN Secretary-General or designated official.

The internship is UNPAID and may be either full-time or part-time. It should be noted that full-time internship working hours are 35 hours per week, while part-time internship working hours are 20 hours per week. The internship will be undertaken either remotely outside the duty station or in a hybrid working arrangement at the UN Premise, New York, United States.

A full-time internship is for an initial period of two months and a part-time internship is for an initial of four months. Internships may be extended up to maximum six months depending on the needs of the Division.

Responsibilities

Under the general supervision of the Public Information Officer, duties may include, but are not limited to:

– Create content for social media as dictated by the monthly editorial calendar.
– Update UNMAS social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc.).
– Assist in creating visuals for social media and digital platforms.
– Create social media analytics reports.
– Assist in creating and editing videos using Adobe Premiere or Final Cut Pro.
– Assist in monitoring media coverage of mine action and international relations issues.
– Research, compile, draft and edit basic information for use in the preparation and production of media material.
– Liaise with public information focal points in UNMAS field programmes in regard to various requests.
– Assist in drafting and preparing background documents, reports, talking points, articles, presentations etc.
– Assist with organizing events, website management and mailing public information materials.
– Attend and summarize conferences and meetings.
– Assist in maintaining databases.
– Perform other duties as necessary.

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following
conditions must be met:

1.Applicants at the time of application must meet one of the following requirements:

(a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree
or equivalent, or higher); or,
(b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree
programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent)

2. The field of study must be closely related to the type of internship you are applying for.

3. Proficient in standard word processing and software applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint or similar; Be proficient in standard office automation equipment, scanner, printer, etc.).

4. Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the United Nations Charter.

5. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
