This internship is located in the Staff Counsellors Office, Human Resources Management Service, Division of Administration, United Nations Office at Geneva, Switzerland. Due to the nature of the Staff Counsellor’s Office activities, the internship shall protect the confidentiality of all professionally acquired information.
The UNOG Staff Counsellors Office is responsible for the promotion of psychosocial wellbeing and good mental health in the workplace, and operates at organizational level, team level and individual level, bridging with relevant stakeholders when necessary.
The internship is being offered for a minimum period of three (3) months, with a possibility of extension up to a maximum period of six (6) months.
The internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five (5) days per week (40 hours) under the general guidance and direct supervision of the Chief Staff Counsellor.
Responsibilities
In general, the intern will support UNOG Staff Counsellor’s Office in fulfilling its mandate to promote well-being and good practices for mental health at UNOG and its Client Entities.
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background, and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, supporting the Staff Counsellors in:
– Conducting research, analysis and presentation of information gathered from diverse sources on assigned topics / issues, such as burnout, emotional intelligence etc..;
– Contributing to the Office’s well-being and burnout prevention programmes;
– Assisting in workshop design and delivery;
– Contributing to the preparation of various written documents, e.g., assisting in the drafting of sections of studies, background papers, etc.;
– Assisting with the update of the internal websites;
– Developing and maintaining reference / resource information on specific topics;
– Performing tasks as requested by the supervisor as appropriate.
The incumbent will:
– be part of a dynamic team;
– learn about and assist with other programmes in the Staff Counsellors Office as desired and required.

Education
To qualify for an internship with the UN Internship programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
(a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
(b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent).
Interested candidates must be pursuing or pursued their degree in areas of adult education, social science, psychology and/or counselling and/or mental health, or in a related field.
In addition, interested candidates must:
– Be computer literate in standard software applications including MS Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point);
– Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and,
– Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Work Experience
No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of French is desirable.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns are responsible for all internship-related expenses that they incur. The United Nations accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during an internship. Therefore, upon award of an internship, interns are responsible for securing adequate insurance coverage and are required to sign and return a statement confirming their understanding and acceptance of these conditions of service.
A person who is the child or sibling of a staff member shall not be eligible to apply for an internship at the United Nations. An applicant who bears to a staff member any other family relationship may be engaged as an intern, provided that he or she shall not be assigned to the same work unit of the staff member nor placed under the direct or indirect supervision of the staff member. For purposes of this instruction, “child” means (i) the child of a staff member; (ii) the child of the spouse of a staff member (stepchild); and (iii) the spouse of a child of a staff member or a staff member’s spouse (son- or daughter-in-law). “Sibling” includes the child of both or either parent of a staff member and the child of the spouse of a parent of a staff member (that is, also half- and step-sibling).
Candidates of certain nationalities must obtain a visa authorizing their stay in Switzerland before they depart for Geneva to begin their internship. While this is the overall responsibility of the selected candidate, we will provide information and supporting documents in this regard.
United Nations Considerations
According to article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity.
