Job Description

Purpose of Consultancy:

UNFPA is a Sexual and Reproductive Health Agency committed to delivering a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person’s potential is fulfilled. In an effort to advance and amplify the work of global and regional priorities in East and Southern Africa Region (ESA), the Regional Office is looking to engage the services of a Communications Support consultant to raise the visibility and credibility of the organisation as a knowledge leader on sexual and reproductive health, using digital communications and outreach. The objective is to highlight UNFPA’s work in the region in alignment with global and regional priorities. The consultant is expected to take lead on and provide support for UNFPA ESARO campaigns, events and visual projects.

Scope of work (Description of services, activities, or outputs):

Under the direct supervision of the UNFPA Regional Communications Adviser, the consultant will produce the following:

• Create and post social media content for the following platforms, and create digital campaigns:
1. Twitter
2. Instagram
3. Facebook
4. LinkedIn
• Update ESARO website’s thematic areas in consultation with technical leads.
• Collect and post content that highlights global and regional priorities from Gender to the global Spotlight Initiative, PSEA, Climate Change, Humanitarian response, etc.
• Maintain the relationship and implementation of work plan activities for the Regional Champion.
• Plan and develop social media campaigns and compelling content based on the above priorities, manage operations processes and maintain platforms.
• Maintain social media assets of ESARO and corporate campaigns via Trello.
• Produce weekly, bi-monthly and events newsletter using MailChimp for UNFPA ESA region.
• Propose innovative microsites within ESARO website and coordinate with HQ web team.
• Create a project management plan to track the deliverables and timeline of the said projects.
• Follow up with technical teams and operations for content and logistics.
• Take minutes of preparation meetings and share these with team members for documentation and feedback of the event preparation process.
• Track traditional and digital media mentions for the communication impact report.
• Use digital illustration, photo editing software, and layout software to create designs, as required.
• Design short publications, both internal and external, using desktop publishing skills.
• Develop themed and corresponding graphics using UNFPA logos and design standards.
• Create infographics, icons and text-warmers to enhance content for events, digital campaigns and other communication products, as required.
• Recreate any tables, graphs and charts that will be required by UNFPA.
• Produce eye-catching and pertinent imagery, incorporating a branded look and feel.
• Provide animation and interactive backgrounds as required.
• Work in close cooperation with and report to the UNFPA ESARO Communications Unit.
• Provide logistics support for events involving ESARO.

Deliverables:

At a minimum, the consultant will be required to produce the following outputs:
● Project management plans for all activities.
● Media monitoring reports of digital communications projects/activities.
● Submit regular quarterly reports regarding social media activity following a project reporting template.

Duration and working schedule:

The assignment is from 1 August to 31 December 2023. The consultant will be on assignment with the objective of building a stockpile of communication products for the UNFPA ESA Regional Office, in addition to responding to communication needs that will arise during the assignment.

Place where services are to be delivered:

UNFPA ESARO, Sunninghill Place, 9 Simba Road, Sunninghill, Johannesburg.

Delivery dates and how work will be delivered (e.g. electronic, hard copy etc.):

The consultant will deliver the products and activities as required within the timeframe set for each output. Files will be delivered electronically prior to end
of contract.

Monitoring and progress control, including reporting requirements, periodicity format and deadline:

The selected consultant will be required to work closely with the Regional Communications Advisor and technical teams when producing requested
outputs.

Duration and working schedule:

The consultancy is a 5-month contract, from 1 August to 31 December 2023.

Supervisory arrangements:

The consultant will work contractually under the supervision of the Regional Communications Advisor for East and Southern Africa.

Expected travel:

No travel expected.

Required expertise, qualifications and competencies, including language requirements:

Education:

A Master’s degree or higher in journalism, communications, political science, economics, international development, international relations, public administration, public health information and communication or any other relevant discipline, with two years’ relevant experience; alternatively, a Bachelor’s degree as above, with four years’ relevant experience.

Experience:

At least two years’ relevant experience in event management and
communications.

Experience in project management, administration, and coordination.

Prior experience of working in the development sector, with a good geopolitical understanding of Africa, and in particular the East and Southern Africa region, is essential.

Good knowledge/understanding of the UN system is preferable; experience working in a multilateral organization is an asset.

Ability to deliver high quality work within strict deadlines.

Excellent self-awareness, self-management skills, and people management skills.

Languages:
Fluency in English is required; French is an asset.

UNFPA will provide relevant support and guidance to ensure the successful undertaking of this consultancy, including administrative support.
