Purpose of consultancy: The writer/editor will be responsible for sourcing, conceptualising, developing, writing and editing/proofreading English content for UNFPA ASRO and country offices. Written content will be created and edited both individually and in collaboration with others, and will include news and feature stories, situation updates/reports, and various pieces for different ASRO platforms (newsletters, video scripts, etc.).
The writer/editor will also be responsible for conducting on the job training and mentoring to communication focal points in the region on story writing and newsletter development.
Responsibilities: Work with the comms team in ASRO and COs to get understanding of the regional and national contexts and support them in content creation by:
- Conceptualise and drafting content for external audiences, including human interest stories, op-eds, and newsletters.
- Working proactively with the regional office and field colleagues to write, review and edit content for publication on the regional and country offices’ channels.
- Providing highly collaborative editorial guidance, oversight, mentoring and on the job training to ASRO and country offices Communication teams.
- Ensuring written and photographic content is accurate, appropriate, engaging and conforms to UNFPA’s high ethical, branding and editorial standards.
- Ensuring that the content is compliant with the UNFPA editorial guidelines and UNFPA glossary.
- Correcting issues at the core of writing such as syntax, flow, and clarity. This includes refining content that has been translated to strengthen quality and cohesiveness.
- Consulting with UNFPA when required;
Required expertise, qualifications and competencies, including language requirements:
Degree in Journalism, Communications or a similar field. An advanced university degree is an advantage.
Knowledge and Experience: –
- At least five years of relevant professional experience in magazine writing, journalism, report writing, technical writing or editing or other editorial areas; additional experience, in particular international experience, is an advantage.
- Superb writing and editing skills, including a strong understanding of storytelling as well as a strong background in editorial work.
- Close attention to details.
- Strong commitment to ethical storytelling.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication and co-creation skills required.
- Ability to manage time, priorities (according to organisational priorities).
- Knowledge of public relations or marketing skills; familiarity with approaches for planning, executing and monitoring communications strategies and campaigns desirable.
