Duties and Responsibilities
BACKGROUND: The International Trade Centre (ITC) is a joint agency of the United Nations and the World Trade Organization supporting the internationalization of MSMEs. Its joint mandate combines a focus on expanding trade opportunities with the aim of fostering sustainable development. ITC’s technical assistance services in relation to environmental sustainability focus on supporting developing countries and their small businesses address environmental challenges and risks and identify emerging opportunities towards a just and inclusive green transition. This position is located in the Green and Inclusive Value Chains Section that leads ITC’s strategy on sustainable trade and manages programmes and global public goods related to environmental and social sustainability working across the value chain and with policy makers and enabling institutions such as Business Support Organizations. ITC is seeking an Environmental Mainstreaming (home-based) consultant to support its Trade Related Technical Assistance (TRTA) projects in mainstreaming environmental sustainability. As part of its commitment to promoting sustainable development, ITC integrates environmental considerations into its trade-related projects to ensure positive environmental impacts. DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES Under the direct supervision of the Programme Manager, Trade and Environment, Green and Inclusive Value Chains (GIVC), the International Consultant will undertake the following: • Develop the implementation framework for the ITC Mainstreaming Guide for integrating environmental considerations into project design, implementation, and monitoring. • Provide technical support and capacity building (2 workshops) to project teams on implementation framework for the ITC Mainstreaming Guide. • Make recommendations for enhancing the monitoring and evaluation system to better capture results of ITC’s climate actions in environmental mainstreaming. • Map and analyse the environmental safeguards in the UN system and make a first draft proposal for ITC. • Facilitate stakeholder consultations and foster partnerships with environmental/UN organizations and experts as needed. • Engage with Strategic Planning, Performance and Governance (SPPG) and other ITC teams as needed. • Develop a report summarizing the work, comprising sections on lessons learned, challenges identified, and recommendations for the next steps among others. • Participate in the biweekly calls with the Trade and Environment team. S/he has further to ensure to obtain accreditation to event(s), if required. Qualifications/special skills
Degree in environmental science, sustainable development, or a related field. Extensive experience (5 years) in environmental management, developing and implementing frameworks and guidelines for environmental considerations integration into projects. Skills: • Demonstrated expertise in conducting environmental impact assessments, developing guidelines, and providing technical support on environmental sustainability. • Strong analytical skills and the ability to identify opportunities for environmental mainstreaming in diverse project settings. • Experience in process improvement, business process reengineering, or related roles. o Desirable: familiarity with the process improvement methodologies such as Lean, Six Sigma, etc. • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with project teams and stakeholders from diverse backgrounds. • Familiarity with international environmental standards, safeguards, conventions, and best practices. o Competence in mapping and analyzing environmental policies, safeguards, and best practices within international systems. • Competent user of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) • Knowledge of the project development and implementation processes.
