Program Overview
The Government of the United Kingdom and the Government of the Republic of Indonesia, through the Ministry of Transportation, have signed an Implementation Agreement (IA) in July 2022 which aims to meet the needs of sustainable development, in particular by developing safer, more inclusive and resilient low-carbon transportation. Funded through the UK PACT Project, a Consortium II led by WRI Indonesia is running a program called “Cities of the Future” (Future Cities). This program aims to increase the ambition of sustainable urban mobility in coastal metropolitan cities, especially in Makassar and Surabaya. Running from 2022 to 2025, the program provides technical assistance to local governments, increases public awareness, and demonstrates landscape design that is resilient to climate change, with a focus on mobility solutions in coastal areas. Together with Vital Strategies and ARUP, WRI Indonesia is trying to help the two coastal cities in developing mobility strategies that are more sustainable, lower emissions, safer, more inclusive and resilient.
The city of Surabaya is one of four main growth center cities in Indonesia, along with Jakarta, Medan and Makassar. The increasingly rapid development of vehicle propulsion technology has also become a concern for big cities in Indonesia, one of which is Surabaya. As part of efforts to help realize the ambition of the Mayor of Surabaya to encourage vehicle electrification in the City of Surabaya, the UK PACT Consortium II intends to assist the Surabaya City government in preparing a study of the Strategy for the Acceleration of Battery-Based Electric Motor Vehicle Ecosystem Development as a joint guidance document for stakeholders. stakeholders in accelerating the realization of the transition to Battery-Based Electric Motorized Vehicles in the City of Surabaya.
The study report shows the public preference in willingness to adopt electric vehicles and the barriers faced by the public in adopting electric vehicles to forecast the electric vehicle market. In addition, the report also explores the effects of various incentives on the adoption of electric vehicles. Therefore, in order to enrich the recommendations in the Strategy for the Acceleration of the Battery-Based Electric Vehicle Ecosystem in Surabaya, WRI in collaboration with private companies of conversion workshops and ride hailing apps plans to conduct an electric conversion motorcycle trial in Surabaya. This trial is expected to increase public interest in adopting electric vehicles and create new opportunities for incentives from various parties in accelerating EV adoption.
