Internships

 

The IAEA accepts a limited number of interns each year. The internships are awarded to persons studying towards a university degree or who have recently received a degree (see Internship web pages for further details).

 

The purpose of the programme is:

 

To provide interns with the opportunity to gain practical work experience in line with their studies or interests, and expose them to the work of the IAEA and the United Nations as a whole;

 

To benefit the IAEA’s programmes through the assistance of qualified students specialized in various professional fields.

 

The duration of an internship is normally not less than three months and not more than one year.

 

 

 

Organizational Setting 

 

The Director General’s Office (DGO) provides leadership and coordination for all IAEA activities at the executive level for meeting Member States’ needs, and achieving a one-house approach and a results-based management.

 

The Office for Public Information and Communication provides objective, accurate and timely information about the IAEA and nuclear developments that fosters public understanding of the IAEA’s global roles. It also provides advice to the Director General on relations with the media and organizes press briefings. The Office coordinates the communication activities for the rest of the house and assists in the media aspects of major IAEA events and conferences.

 

The Web, Digital Media and Public Information Materials Section has corporate responsibility for the editorial management, creation and development of information products with a particular focus on the web, digital media, internal communications and cross-departmental promotional material.

 

 

 

Main Purpose

 

The main purpose of the internship is to provide the holder with an opportunity to gain practical working experience in an international organization in the area of communications, while providing valuable support to the existing team.

 

 

 

Functions / Key Results Expected

 

  • Support graphic design needs, from layout to illustration, primarily using the Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign and After Effects are a must/Premiere is desirable) and Canva. 
  • Creating animated graphics for different platforms, such as interactive web stories and social media platforms. 
  • Design and adapt easily understandable visuals and infographics for both print and digital outputs for various IAEA-related topics. 
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office/PPT to support the team in creating templates and presentations. 
  • Assisting with photography coverage of events and conferences, and drafting description texts for Flicker. 
  • Support the localization team to adapt visuals once translations are provided into the UN’s official languages, enhancing social media outreach and ensuring global accessibility. 
  • Support with visual asset content libraries to organizes projects by topic in an archive / make sure that naming of folders and subfolders is correct and follows the predefined standards. 

 

 

Qualifications and Experience

 

  • University degree in Communications/Graphic Design/Journalism/Film/Multimedia or related field. 
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign and After Effects) and Canva is required 
  • Experience with Adobe Premiere and use of Trello is desired 
  • Familiarity with IAEA topics is an asset 
  • Experience working in communications and social media is an asset 
  • Basic knowledge of other design tools such as Figma, Cinema 4D is an asset 
  • Experience with photography, ideally using DSLRs 
  • Experience managing photographic databases an asset 
  • Experience with corporate use of graphics, photos and social media is an asset 
  • Detailed oriented, technical mindset 
  • A keen eye for detail, ensuring visual consistent design across platforms and products, and implementing the IAEA visual guidelines 

 

 

Applicant Eligibility

 

  • Candidates must be a minimum of 20 years of age and have completed at least three years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a first degree. 
  • Candidates may apply up to one year after the completion of a bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate degree. 
  • Candidates must not have previously participated in the IAEA’s internship programme. 
  • Good written and spoken English essential; fluency in any other IAEA official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish or Russian) an asset. 
  • Candidates must attach two signed letters of recommendation to their application.
