JOB DETAIL

Internship in Real-time services and System Operations Division

Internship title: Analysis of the WMO Information System (WIS 2.0) from EUMETSAT’s perspective

Since it began operations, EUMETSAT has relied upon WMO’s Global Telecommunication System (GTS) to distribute products and data operationally to global partners, and to acquire observation data for ground segment processing and validation.

WMO is in the process of moving to a new system – the WMO Information System (WIS 2.0).

In the coming months EUMETSAT will organise its preparations for WIS 2.0 as an operations project. In parallel, WMO will be running pilot projects to refine the WIS 2.0 design and specification. National Meteorological Services and other data collection and production centres will be considering use of “WIS2 in a box” to facilitate their move to WIS 2.0.

The internship will contribute to EUMETSAT’s preparations for WIS 2.0, and will provide the intern with an insight into global data distribution of satellite and meteorological data.

The intern will gain an insight into all these processes; they will be in a position to contribute to the EUMETSAT project and potentially to the evolution of the “WIS in a box” software.

The internship will provide the opportunity to see how an international organisation is able to cooperate on a technical level with key international partners in the satellite meteorology and data exchange communities.

Duties

The main tasks of the internship would be to:

  • Understand the goal and underlying concepts of WIS 2.0;
  • Consider opportunities and challenges for EUMETSAT coming from the move to WIS 2.0;
  • Establish the readiness of EUMETSAT’s users for the transition from GTS to WIS 2.0;
  • Analyse the “WIS2 in a box” provided by WMO and consider its possible applicability to EUMETSAT.
  • In addition, the intern will support relevant day-to-day activities within the team.
