Internships
The IAEA accepts a limited number of interns each year. The internships are awarded to persons studying towards a university degree or who have recently received a degree (see Internship web pages for further details).
The purpose of the programme is:
To provide interns with the opportunity to gain practical work experience in line with their studies or interests, and expose them to the work of the IAEA and the United Nations as a whole.
To benefit the IAEA’s programmes through the assistance of qualified students specialized in various professional fields.
Organizational Setting
The Director General’s Office (DGO) provides leadership and coordination for all IAEA activities at the executive level for meeting Member States’ needs, and achieving a one-house approach and a results-based management.
Main Purpose
The Liaison Office in Geneva follows developments in areas of interest to the IAEA, represents the IAEA at inter-governmental and inter-organizational meetings, performs liaison and provides information about IAEA activities to the UN system organizations in Geneva, Permanent Missions of Member States of the United Nations, IAEA Member States which do not have Permanent Missions in Vienna, the media, government, academic and scientific institutions, and the civil society.
Under the supervision of Head of the Liaison Office in Geneva, the intern will gain hands-on experience by providing support in outreach activities and support in wide-range of activities to the conference/meetings during the internship.
Functions / Key Results Expected
• Assist with writing reports on meetings related to the IAEA and other events;
• Assist with organizing events and meetings to support increased outreach and visibility of the IAEA in Geneva and supporting dissemination of outreach materials;
• Gain hands-on experience in multilateral meetings in Geneva through participation in discussions and observing/supporting with planning, preparing and implementing assigned tasks;
• Assist with conducting research on developments and trends at other international organizations in Geneva and preparing related reports.
Qualifications and Experience
• University degree in international relations, international security or relevant discipline.
• General knowledge of United Nations System, non-proliferation, energy, climate change or health an asset.
• Excellent written and spoken English essential and fluency in French is highly desirable.
Applicant Eligibility
• Candidates must be a minimum of 20 years of age and have completed at least three years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a first degree.
• Candidates may apply up to one year after the completion of a bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate degree.
• Candidates must not have previously participated in the IAEA’s internship programme.
• Good written and spoken English essential; fluency in any other IAEA official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish or Russian) an asset.
• Candidates must attach two signed letters of recommendation to their application.
