These interviews are conducted by various staff members from protection units. Our goal is to provide international protection to individuals fleeing their countries of origin.

Context

This task is essential for UNHCR to provide international protection to individuals fleeing their home countries. Interpretation services play a crucial role in facilitating effective communication between asylum seekers, refugees, and UNHCR staff, ensuring that they receive the assistance they need. Volunteers must be familiar with UNHCR’s goals, mandate, and the principles of confidentiality and impartiality. They should understand the challenges faced by refugees and asylum seekers and be aware of communication guidelines and best practices in interpretation to ensure their work aligns with UNHCR’s standards.

Task Description

UNHCR is looking for online volunteers to provide interpretation services for registration, refugee status determination, protection, and resettlement interviews, translating from French into various Sub-Saharan African languages (e.g., Malinke, Bissa, Dendi, Dogon, Soninke, Moré, and Mossi). Interviews will be conducted remotely via Teams, starting at 8:30 AM (Algiers time). Responsibilities: Interpret interviews for different protection units, dedicating 1 to 3 hours per day from French to the specified Sub-Saharan African languages. Ensure that interpretations are concise, align with our code of conduct, and are appropriate for the audience. Requirements: All individuals engaged by UNHCR to provide interpretation services must sign the UNHCR Interpreter Undertaking of Confidentiality and Impartiality, which will be provided upon confirmation of nomination. Online volunteers will receive induction training on UNHCR’s mandate and interpretation modalities related to refugees. Your contribution will play a vital role in ensuring effective communication and providing support to those seeking protection.
