Org. Setting and Reporting
These positions are located in the Department for General Assembly and Conference Management (DGACM) at headquarters, Geneva, Vienna and Nairobi as well as the Regional Commissions where applicable. These positions are under the general supervision of the Chief of Interpretation or Language Section/Service as appropriate.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Interpreters will be responsible for the following duties:
• Services up to seven meetings per week (exceptionally eight), usually of no more than three hours duration, of various United Nations bodies.
• English, French, Russian or Spanish interpreters provide interpretation, as required, into an official language of speeches or statements given in two other official languages. Arabic or Chinese interpreters provide interpretation into Arabic or Chinese of speeches given in English or French and interpretation into English or French – as appropriate – of speeches given in Arabic or Chinese.
• May occasionally be assigned to sensitive meetings.
• May function as team leader of all interpreters assigned to a given meeting.
• May perform other related duties, as required.

Education
A first level degree from a university is required. An advanced university degree (Master’s or Doctorate degree, or equivalent) in simultaneous interpretation or related fields is desirable.
It is required that applicants have passed the United Nations Competitive Examination for Language Positions (CELP or LCE) for Chinese Interpreters or who are already placed on the “Global Language Roster” (GLR) for Chinese interpreters.
Work Experience
A technical or vocational certificate in simultaneous interpretation is required
It is required that applicants have passed UN Competitive Exam for Language Positions (CELP or LCE) for Chinese Interpreters or are already on Global Language Roster (GLR) for Chinese Interpreters.
At least two years of professional interpreting experience in international organizations is required.
Languages
Perfect command of Chinese, which must be the candidate’s main language. Must have an excellent knowledge of English and knowledge of an additional official language.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
Special Notice
