Infrastructure is one of IFC’s strategic priorities. IFC’s Infrastructure department supports the World Bank Group’s aim of improving access to efficient, reliable and affordable infrastructure for the poor in emerging markets. The team is responsible for originating and managing IFC’s investment activities in the following sectors: Power Generation, Distribution and Transmission, Mining, Transport & logistics, Telecommunications, Water, Waste, Privatized Public Services and other Subnational/Cities financing. IFC’s focus in the sector is on: (i) increasing access to basic infrastructure services; (ii) supporting local companies, while improving transparency and corporate governance; (iii) exploring new equity and debt investment opportunities and catalyzing foreign direct investments, including co-investments and mobilizing syndicated and parallel loans; (iv) introducing and developing new financial products including through Public Private Partnerships; and (v) building long-term partnerships with strong global and regional players.
The Latin America and the Caribbean Infrastructure Unit, an open and dynamic unit involved in origination, structuring, and supervision of IFC’s infrastructure investments in the region, is seeking for an Investment Officer to join our team in Washington DC.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The selected candidate will support project teams in the transport, energy water, waste and municipal sectors in product strategy and positioning, managing relationships with strategic partners, spearheading business development activities, as well as supporting the implementation and monitoring of infrastructure debt and equity investment projects. Opportunities may be provided to lead and/or support infrastructure projects in the broader Latin American and the Caribbean Region
• Lead / coordinate mapping and screening business opportunities in infrastructure segments; undertaking market research and performing corresponding integrity checks.
• Assess the attractiveness of specific investment opportunities with a strong focus on credit quality, viability and development impact and contribute to recommendations to IFC’s management.
• Support the development of a strong pipeline of good quality investment opportunities by anticipating market trends and employing sector knowledge.
• Support transaction teams during investment due diligence. Evaluate, structure, negotiate, and close new transactions from the mandate stage.
• Coordinate closely with social, environmental, legal and technical specialists in order to add value to our clients’ businesses, find pragmatic solutions to the specific sector challenges, and achieve sustainable development impact.
• Support negotiation/documentation stages of transactions; use strong negotiation skills to develop solutions and overcome impasses in straightforward and complex transactions.
• Actively manage and/or support portfolio investments; including potentially restructurings, rescheduling, processing waivers, disbursements, etc.
• Support teams managing relationships with clients, global and regional private businesses, banking and multilateral partners and government officials to further develop the sector and to develop specific investment opportunities.
Selection Criteria
• Master’s degree in a related field and at least 6–8 years of relevant experience. Related fields of education include business, finance, or economics or an area of expertise specific to a sector, subject matter, or industry specialty. Relevant experience could include a proven track record in business consulting or investment banking, or operational experience in the sector or technical or professional field.
• Strong technical financial and investment skills with at least 4 years of post-MBA/or equivalent experience in finance; as well as relevant experience structuring infrastructure investments. Relevant working experience in transport, electricity, water, waste or municipal projects is strongly desirable.
• Track record in infrastructure projects in LAC (strongly desirable), including limited recourse project finance transactions; corporate finance and/or equity transactions. Relevant experience in the Caribbean is strongly desirable.
• Genuine interest and knowledge of relevant infrastructure and regional sector trends.
• “Can-do” attitude and demonstrated ability to think outside the box and push the envelope.
• Ability to engage with private sector clients, local and national governments and other stakeholders to encourage pioneering business and market development.
• Experience in project/program management, including executing against implementation plans with defined business development milestones.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and Spanish. Fluency in other languages (Portuguese) is a plus.
• Strong inter-personal skills, ability to interact effectively with clients and colleagues from various cultural backgrounds.
