IFC Equity Mobilization Department (AMC) within the Treasury & Syndications Vice President Unit (VPU) at IFC, mobilizes and manages capital for private equity investments in emerging markets. AMC was created in 2009 to provide investors with access to IFC’s emerging markets investment pipeline and to expand the supply of long-term capital to these markets, enhancing IFC’s development goals and generating profits for investors by leveraging IFC’s global reach, standards, investment approach, and track record. AMC has raised US$10.2 billion through thirteen investment funds that invest across a variety of sectors, geographies, and strategies.
AMC is currently in the process of launching two new funds fully aligned with IFC’s priorities. In addition, other new funds are being contemplated in the near term that supports IFC corporate priorities. Please see AMC’s website at www.ifcamc.org for more information on AMC’s business.
AMC is looking to hire an Investment Manager (G1) to work across two of its funds – IFC Global Infrastructure Fund (GIF) and IFC Fund of Funds (FoF). The position will be based in Washington, DC.
IFC Global Infrastructure Fund:
IFC Global Infrastructure Fund a 1.2 billion fund (vintage 2013) made and now manages equity and equity-related infrastructure investments in companies operating in the power, transportation, water, telecommunications, oil and gas midstream and downstream sectors.
IFC Fund of Funds:
The IFC Fund of Funds comprises the US$418 million IFC Catalyst Fund (vintage 2012), which invests in private equity funds, platform companies, and co-investments focused on providing capital to renewable energy projects and to companies that develop resource-efficient, low-carbon products and services in the emerging markets, and the US$800 million IFC Global Emerging Markets Fund of Funds (vintage 2015), which invests in private equity funds, secondaries, and co-investments, in emerging markets. Together, these funds have invested in over 40 private equity funds and are actively managing their investments to generate attractive returns for their investors.
The Investment Manager will report to the Heads of the AMC-managed Funds with responsibilities including but not limited to:
Portfolio
• Proactively manage existing equity portfolio to increase the value of AMC investee companies and actively generate attractive returns for Limited Partners, including complex and challenging structures and situations
• Work with AMC senior leadership, investee companies and respective IFC deal teams to provide operational value-add and strategic guidance to portfolio investments
• Design and execute exit strategies from portfolio investments
• Serve as Board observer and/or Board member for select investee companies (where applicable) and contribute to the performance and strategic direction of the company
• Manage strong relationships with senior management and board of directors of select portfolio companies, sometimes solely, where applicable
• Ability to proactively connect the dots across portfolio management lessons learned to generate innovative ideas, value-add, or solutions that can be replicated where relevant.
• Designated Portfolio Officer for AMC and occasionally IFC investments, where necessary, handling relevant work related to corporate actions by investee companies and monitoring of financial performance
• Support and work with other AMC funds on joint investments
• Lead and generate high quality material for quarterly and annual fund reporting.
Investor relations and fund raising
• Contribute to the fundraising of any new AMC funds including research & development and drafting of PPM, and pitchbook material, whilst also managing, coordinating and participating in investor roadshow presentations, creation & management of data room whilst also drafting Q&A in response to LP queries
• Build and maintain strong relationships with existing and prospective Limited Partners
• Plan and lead regular LP visits with other members from the fund team and Client Relations team.
Team
• Lead by example and help build a trusted, high performance, inclusive and collegiate team culture that encourages junior professionals to excel and develop
• Leverage expertise of all team members to ensure successful outcomes
• Work closely with IFC counterparts across all aspects of the businesses of AMC and AMC-managed Funds.
Selection Criteria
The successful candidate is likely to have worked for a private equity firm, a fund of funds management business, an international financial institution or a major bank with significant emerging markets presence. She/He will have strong expertise in structuring and executing transactions, valuation and financial modeling skills, portfolio management and business strategy. She/He will have a deep understanding of international best market practices and global trends in emerging markets; strong analytical and technical skills, experience in structuring private equity deals, including an ability to mitigate risks and enhance returns; and expertise in negotiating complex deals and handle corporate and financial restructurings. Experience working on investments in and/or financial advisory to the infrastructure sector is preferred.
The background and experience of the selected candidate is expected to include the following elements:
• M.B.A or equivalent degree with at least 8 years of relevant professional experience in an investment bank and/or private equity firm, focusing on principal investments
• Proven and recent deal track-record of sourcing, structuring and closing equity investments, including investments in emerging markets
• Strong track record of portfolio management of complex equity projects
• Outstanding analytical and critical thinking skills; demonstrated ability to synthetize complex information and make concrete strategic and tactical recommendations
• Mature business judgment, sound commercial instincts
• Ability to develop relationships with the senior management of potential clients, financial and technical partners as well as government officials
• Strong track record as Board of Directors Observer across different companies and sectors
• Proven experience in managing and contributing to senior Limited Partner relationships
• Excellent oral and written communication skills in English, including a demonstrated ability to communicate complex business messages into clear communication messages; fluency in other languages (e.g., French, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese) would be a plus
• Strong inter-personal skills, ability to interact effectively with clients and colleagues from various cultural backgrounds
• Team player and experience in managing, motivating, and growing junior professionals
• Demonstrated commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and Sustainable Development
• Highly motivated and committed to highest ethical standards
• Willingness to travel extensively.
