Organizational Setting and Reporting Relationship

The position of Investment Specialist is assigned to the Equity Investment Unit in the Office of the Director General (OPSD-EIU) within the Private Sector Operations Department (PSOD). You will be based at our Headquarters in Manila, Philippines, and may be assigned in one of ADB’s Resident Missions.

You will report to Advisor, PSOD and Unit Head, OPSD-EIU, and will oversee Junior team members.

Your Role

As an Investment Specialist, you will lead the Deal Team and will contribute to the build-out and development of a “best in class” equity asset and portfolio management function.

You will:

a. Origination and Processing

  • Originate equity investments.
  • Manage due diligence process and ensure that the assessment is carried out on expected risks and return.
  • Provide advice on direct equity structuring, valuation, and bidding strategy to the deal team.

b. Portfolio Management

  • Assume primary relationship responsibility for assigned accounts.
  • Oversee the monitoring of financial health and development impact of accounts, ensuring issues are addressed and strategic goals are met.
  • Review documents such as waivers and amendments, ratings, quarterly valuation, extended review/other reports, exit proposals.
  • Be a nominee director on the board of ADB investee companies.
  • Ensure compliance to ADB’s shareholder agreement rights and Environmental and Social safeguards standards, working with the Private Sector Transaction Support team.
  • Evaluate portfolio based on criteria such as composition, size, quality, concentration risk, diversification, credit quality migration, and valuation movements.
  • Compare and implement approved exit strategies.

c. Strategy and Planning

  • Lead the development of a sound portfolio management strategy.

d. Knowledge Center for Governance, Risk Advisory, and Development Impact

  • Lead introduction of international best practices in corporate governance, risk management and internal controls at investee companies.
  • Measure development, environmental and social safeguard outcomes.

e. External Liaison and Knowledge Sharing

  • Develop relationships with financial intermediaries, institutional investors, commercial partners and business leaders.
  • Analyze and report on market and investment trends.

f. Staff Management

  • Oversee staff by providing clear direction, regular monitoring and provision of feedback on performance, and supporting staff’s learning and development goals.

Qualifications

You will need:

  • A University degree in Business Administration, Finance, or related fields; preferably at post-graduate level or its equivalent
  • At least 6 years of experience with the private sector in Origination, Processing and Portfolio management covering equity, capital markets and financial structuring.
  • International experience working in several emerging markets with understanding and appreciation of equity markets and products.
  • Structuring and financing capabilities. Experience in financial modeling, risk management and advanced valuation analysis.
  • Expected to lead negotiations with portfolio companies, shareholders, sponsors and existing/new investors.
  • Experience leading diverse team.
  • Frequent travel to developing member countries (DMCs).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English, in particular ability in business writing.

Additional Information

This position is crucial to the Workforce Rebalancing Framework (2022-2027), a strategic initiative aimed at enhancing ADB’s in-house expertise previously sourced from the external workforce. The role seeks seasoned experts with substantial field experience capable of leading policy dialogue, and projects focused on delivering knowledge solutions. Successful candidates may occasionally undertake short-term assignments in other groups or departments when required.

This is a fixed term appointment with option to renew for an initial period of three (3) years following Section 3.1 (b) of Administrative Order No. 2.01 (“Recruitment and Appointment’). This appointment is not convertible to a regular appointment. At the end of the initial period, this appointment may be renewed for a period of up to three years, or not renewed. There is no limit on the number of renewals. This appointment is open to internal and external applicants.
