OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST

The Digital Bureau Solution is the entity responsible for ICT operations within UNESCO, and reports to the Assistant Director General to Administration (ADG/ADM). The team oversees the implementation of UNESO’s digital strategy, with the delivery of (1) more integrated and properly codified project and knowledge management in support of programme delivery; (2) the provision of a resilient IT infrastructure, and best-in-class service management to enable effective programme delivery; and (3) the provision of strengthened cyber security and digital risk management.

Under the overall authority of the Chief Information Technology Officer and the direct supervision of the Senior Cybersecurity and Digital Assets Manager, the Consultant/Contract Holder will provide artificial intelligence (AI) engineering service using Azure OpenAI in compliance with the UNESCO rules and regulations, practices, standards, and procedures to support the development of tools and capabilities related to AI technologies in the UNESCO Secretariat.

The consultant/contract holder will contribute to maintaining and enhancing existing AI solutions and support the development of pilots of new internal UNESCO services.

ASSIGNMENTS/ DELIVERABLES

  • Deploy, test, and fine-tune AI applications, as an Azure AI environment administrator, or other AI platforms as appropriate and approved by DBS’s management.
  • Validate the data collection, cleansing, and preparation of source data for model training, ensuring data quality, integrity and adequacy to UNESCO data standards and ethics.
  • Collaborate with UNESCO’s internal and external project owners to define metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs) for evaluating AI models.
  • Assist in building user interfaces and visualization components to facilitate interaction with AI systems.
  • Contribute to the documentation of tools, APIs, and libraries to enhance knowledge sharing within the organization.
  • Participate in model improvement efforts, including parameter tuning, feature selection, and ensemble techniques.

The Consultant/ Contract Holder it is expected to:

  • Deploy, test and fine-tune AI applications as requested by the supervisor.
  • Provide Sandbox environments to users for testing and collaboration.
  • Validate data collection, collaborate with users on metrics and KPI for the evaluation of AI models.
  • Document tools, APIs and libraries; document processes and deployments to enhance knowledge sharing within the organization.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, or a related field.

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in programming languages commonly used in AI development, such as Python, Java, or R.
  • Understanding of data preprocessing techniques, statistical analysis, and visualization tools.

Problem-solving Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to learn quickly and adapt to new technologies, algorithms, and methodologies.

Communication and Teamwork:

  • Good understanding of working in diverse and multi-cultural environments.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills to collaborate with team members and stakeholders.
