Duties and Responsibilities
In line with the ICTS department’s objectives to expand and enhance ESCWA’s technological capabilities and establish a Data Ecosystem as a prominent resource for the Arab Region, the department is actively engaged in various initiatives and projects encompassing data management, data pipelines, data visualization, pre-processing, Machine Learning, optimization, web development, web hosting, User Interface, and graphic design.
As a result, ICTS is seeking skilled technical professionals who can execute these projects, while simultaneously strengthening ESCWA’s technological knowledge and capacity through internal solutions. This job vacancy is for a Junior ML Engineer who will be responsible for contributing to the correct interpretation of critical datasets, executing data pre-processing tasks, and implementing state-of-the-art ML algorithms for general ML, Big Data, and Natural Language Processing (NLP) applications.
Under the overall guidance of the Chief of ICTS, and direct supervision by the unit and team leader, the key objectives include:
• Supporting the development and implementation of ML models and algorithms.
• Assisting in data collection, cleaning, and preprocessing tasks.
• Identify, analyze, and interpret trends or patterns in complex data sets.
• Collaborating with senior engineers and data scientists to ensure the successful implementation of ML projects.
• Contributing to the improvement of existing ML models and algorithms.
• Providing technical assistance and support in ML-related tasks.
• Participating in knowledge-sharing activities and staying updated with the latest advancements in ML and AI technologies.
• Passion for a fast-paced agile environment and delivering functional perfection in short time windows.
• Ability to transform ideas to working prototypes related to applying data analysis techniques for problem solving.
• Knowledge of professional software engineering practices & standard methodologies for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations.
• Excellent written and verbal technical communication; Ability to explain complex.
• Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications/special skills
A Bachelor degree in Computer Science, Information Management, Statistics, Mathematics, Physics or related area is required.

A minimum of 1 year of professional work experience as Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning engineer, or closely similar role is required.
Knowledge of ML and AI algorithms, techniques and technologies is required.
Knowledge of Database design and data normalization methods is required.
Knowledge of data analysis techniques and algorithms using programming languages such as (SQL, Python and R) is required.
A minimum of 1 year of experience with self-service analytics and data visualization applications is desirable.
Knowledge of ETL tools (Talend, Informatica, etc.) and Cloud based data technologies (AWS, Azure, etc.) is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA.
For this position, fluency in English is required, and knowledge of Arabic is desirable.
Note: “Fluency” equals a rating of ‘fluent’ in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of ‘confident’ in two of the four areas.
