Duties and Responsibilities
Josour is a regional initiative for a better future for all. It aims to reduce inequalities between the haves and the have-nots. A prominent inequality in the Arab region is youth unemployment. It is the highest in the world, with figures reaching 26 per cent in 2021, compared to the global average rate of 12 per cent. Given the magnitude of the youth unemployment challenge – which is seen as a major potential driver for social and political unrest in the region – the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) is launching the Josour Initiative.
The individual contract will be tasked to work on the following:
1. Substantive research in areas related to the Josour Initiative. This includes reviewing existing literature as a background analysis.
2. Conduct data analysis using (i) data from the ESCWA Skills Monitor and (i) data from different government hubs, and labor related surveys .
3. Match Skills with Jobs in Labor force Surveys.
4. Assist in technical assistance to Arab countries including in developing concept notes, training material, and country tailored policy research.
Qualifications/special skills
A Master’s degree in Economics or related area is required.
All candidates must submit a copy of the required educational degree. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.
A minimum of 1 year of experience in conducting microeconomics research including labor market analysis using econometrics or related techniques is required.
Experience in household surveys and/or firm level surveys is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA.
For this position, fluency in English and Arabic is required.
Note: “Fluency” equals a rating of ‘fluent’ in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of ‘confident’ in two of the four areas.

Recruitment for this position is on a local basis. The incumbent is required to have the legal right to live and work in the specified working location.
