The Data Lab is WRI’s core data innovation and delivery unit. Its mission is to use advances in data and technology to help our community improve lives, protect nature and ensure just transitions. The Data Lab provides robust technical support and guidance to leverage the technological possibilities of today in favor of a sustainable and equitable future. You will be supporting TerraMatch, which connects local land restoration champions to capital and technical assistance through a trusted online system that vets their work, supports their growth, and monitors their progress.​

Job Highlight:

The Lead Product Engineer – TerraMatch will serve as architect and lead engineer for TerraMatch, an online platform and mobile app that resources local community organizations and entrepreneurs that restore degraded land through a trusted system that vets, supports, and monitors their projects at scale. You will work closely with the TerraMatch program and product staff, and junior engineers, to develop new features, fix bugs, and improve the product. You will also be a part of the broader Data Lab engineering team and report to the Head of Engineering.

What will you do:

Product Architecture and Engineering (100%):

• Develop expertise in the architecture, technology, and functional requirements of TerraMatch
• Work with the TerraMatch team (in-house engineers and 3rd party vendors) to write, review, and deploy code, following software engineering best practices, to deliver product features, reduce technical debt, and improve software architecture, reliability, and performance
• Apply cloud engineering best practices to ensure reliable, scalable infrastructure to meet product performance and maintenance needs
• Develop deep expertise in WRI’s internal API’s and common infrastructure to ensure consistent use and integration across products
• Work with the TerraMatch team to turn user stories and feature requests into technical requirements, and ensure a consistent approach to building, testing, and QC of new features
• Stay abreast of the latest developments in full-stack software engineering and geospatial technologies, tools, and techniques, and make recommendations for adoption
• Mentor and advise junior software engineers to ensure code quality, software reliability, consistent CI/CD processes, and clear documentation
• Support the Head of Engineering in building the TerraMatch engineering team by hiring, training, and managing new engineers

What will you need:

• Education: You will have a completed Bachelor’s degree
• Experience: You will have 7+ years of experience
• Experience writing production-level code in a common web programming language, such as Javascript, Python, PHP or Ruby
• Experience using professional software engineering techniques such as the software development lifecycle, CI/CD, and agile methodology and associated tools
• Ability to evaluate new technologies, engineering practices, and software libraries, and drive their adoption by developing custom integrations, best practices for use, and deployment strategies
• Experience evaluating the technical requirements of a software system, and recommend an appropriate cloud architecture for deployment
• Experience designing and implementing reusable software modules or libraries with a clean API, intended for use by other engineers internally and/or externally
• Preferred: experience working with GIS tools and software libraries to build interactive map-based applications and/or perform geospatial analysis
• Preferred: experience working in the environmental sector, in either the private sector, public sector, or non-profit sector

Potential Salary: The salary range is between 116,000 and 125,000 USD. Salary is commensurate with experience and other compensable factors.
