Duties and Responsibilities

In line with ESCWA’s ICTS department’s objectives to expand and enhance ESCWA’s technological capabilities and establish a Data Ecosystem as a prominent resource for the Arab Region, the department is actively engaged in various initiatives and projects encompassing data management, data pipelines, data visualization, pre-processing, Machine Learning and optimization.

In this context, ICTS is seeking skilled technical professionals to support the implementation of these projects, while simultaneously strengthening ESCWA’s technological knowledge and capacity.
This job vacancy is for an ML Engineer who will be responsible for contributing to the interpretation of several datasets, executing data pre-processing tasks, and implementing state ML algorithms for general ML, Big Data, and Natural Language Processing (NLP) applications.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Under the overall guidance of the Chief of ICTS, and direct supervision by the unit head of the Data Science team, the Machine Learning Engineer will be responsible for the following duties:
• Supporting the development and implementation of ML models and algorithms
• Assisting in data collection, cleaning, and preprocessing tasks.
• Identify, analyze, and interpret trends or patterns in complex data sets related to Jobs skills market.
• Collaborating with senior engineers and data scientists to ensure the successful implementation of ML projects.
• Contributing to the improvement of existing ML models and algorithms.
• Providing technical assistance and support in ML-related tasks.
• Knowledge of professional software engineering practices & standard methodologies for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations.
• Excellent written and verbal technical communication
• Perform other duties as required

Qualifications/special skills

A Bachelor degree in Computer Science, Information Management, Statistics is required.

A minimum of 2 years of professional work experience as Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning engineer, or closely similar role is required.
Knowledge of ML and AI algorithms, techniques and technologies, database design and data normalization methods, data analysis techniques and algorithms using programming languages such as (SQL, Python and R), and cloud based data technologies (AWS, Azure, etc.) is required.
A minimum of 1 year of experience with self-service analytics and data visualization applications is required.
Knowledge of ETL tools (Talend, Informatica, etc.) is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA.

For this position, fluency in English is required, and fluency in Arabic is desirable.

Note: “Fluency” equals a rating of ‘fluent’ in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of ‘confident’ in two of the four areas.

Recruitment for this position is on a local basis. The incumbent is required to have the legal right to live and work in the specified working location.
