ABOUT THE JOB

The Mechanic is responsible for maintaining the operational integrity of DRC & HDP vehicle fleets and generators. The position involves regular repairs, servicing, and preventive maintenance to ensure all vehicles are in a roadworthy condition. The role includes providing expert advice to drivers and fleet teams to ensure optimal vehicle performance, safety, and compliance with organizational policies. The Mechanic works closely with the Fleet Coordinator and other team members to maintain efficiency and effectiveness in fleet operations.

Responsibilities:

1. Vehicle and Generator Maintenance:

  • Perform comprehensive repairs and servicing of the DRC & HDP vehicle fleet, including light vehicles, trucks, and armored vehicles.
  • Conduct regular servicing and maintenance of DRC & HDP generators, ensuring consistent and reliable power supply.
  • Implement a preventive maintenance schedule for all vehicles and generators to reduce breakdowns and extend the lifespan of the equipment.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems to diagnose and resolve issues effectively.

2. Inspection and Monitoring:

  • Carry out regular technical inspections of vehicles to monitor their mechanical condition, identifying potential problems before they escalate.
  • Keep detailed records of vehicle inspections, maintenance schedules, and repairs conducted, ensuring the fleet remains compliant with organizational standards.
  • Conduct safety checks, including brake systems, tires, lights, and other essential components, ensuring all vehicles meet road safety requirements.
  • Assess vehicle readiness for operational tasks and ensure all equipment is in optimal condition before deployment.

3. Driver Support and Training:

  • Provide technical guidance to drivers regarding proper vehicle care, maintenance practices, and driving techniques to ensure vehicle longevity and safe operation.
  • Assist in the training and refresher training of drivers, focusing on safe driving practices, vehicle maintenance checks, and proper use of equipment, following the Driver Training Manual.
  • Monitor driver behavior and work ethics related to vehicle care, and fuel consumption, and report any concerns to the Fleet Coordinator or Logistics Officer.

4. Coordination and Consultation:

  • Coordinate with other mechanics and maintenance teams within the organization to ensure all vehicles across different areas of operation are serviced and maintained consistently.
  • Collaborate with external service providers and workshops, ensuring quality control on outsourced repair jobs and adherence to service agreements.

5. Equipment Management and Reporting:

  • Identify the need for specific vehicle parts, tools, and equipment, and place requisition orders in coordination with the Fleet/SC Officer and Procurement team.
  • Maintain a stock of essential spare parts and tools for routine maintenance and emergency repairs.
  • Report all vehicle usage, repair activities, and technical issues daily to the Fleet/Supply Chain Officer.
  • Ensure compliance with organizational procedures and timely submission of reports related to vehicle maintenance and usage.

6. Emergency Response and Roadside Assistance:

  • Be available for emergency vehicle repairs, roadside assistance, or recovery of immobilized vehicles.
  • Provide timely support during vehicle breakdowns, ensuring minimal disruption to operations.

7. Record-Keeping and Filing:

  • Maintain an organized and up-to-date filing system of all vehicle maintenance records, inspection reports, and repairs conducted.
  • Ensure accurate documentation is available for audits and support the Supply Chain Officer in audit preparation with updated records.

8. Health, Safety, and Environmental Compliance:

  • Adhere to organizational health, safety, and environmental regulations during vehicle repairs and maintenance.
  • Ensure that the workshop is equipped with appropriate safety tools and protective equipment and follow standard safety procedures.

9. Miscellaneous:

  • Perform any additional duties assigned by the Supply Chain Manager, Supply Chain Officer, or other relevant staff members.
  • Continuously seek ways to improve vehicle maintenance procedures and implement industry best practices.

To be successful in this role you must have:

Experience and technical competencies:

  • Experience and technical competencies: (include years of experience)
  • Five years’ experience.
  • Able to work on both types of vehicles (Patrol and diesel)

Education/qualifications:

  • Education: (include certificates, licenses, etc.)
  • Graduated from high school

Languages:

  • English (Written and Spoken) – Fair
  • Dari / Pasto (Written and Spoken) – Fluent
