JOB DETAIL

Under the overall supervision of the Chief of Mission and direct supervision of the Project Development and Reporting Officer, and in coordination with the Senior Regional Media and Communications Officer, the Senior Media and Communications Associate will be responsible and accountable for managing the implementation of media and communications-related activities in IOM Country Office (CO).

  • Coordinate the implementation of IOM Papua New Guinea’s internal and external communications strategies and outreach in line with the Organization’s strategic communications priorities and guidelines, promoting an accurate narrative on migration-related issues with the media, general public, the UN, and other key partners;
  • Work closely with programme teams to capture and respond to their communication needs, translating them into visual solutions (videos, photobooks etc.), social media and traditional media that articulate complex messages in an accessible and impactful manner for diverse audiences;
  • Support IOM Papua New Guinea’s outreach activities such as roundtables, panel discussions, joint events, meetings with partners, field visits, and project meetings and workshops with communications. This includes preparing a comms strategy for each programme and activity and then implementing this strategy in coordination with programme team and senior management;
  • With the support of the regional Media & Communication Unit, conceive of and implement audio-visual campaign concepts around key programming portolios, international days and events to strengthen IOM’s brand recognition;
  • Develop and maintain contacts with government officials, NGOs, journalists, and other key stakeholders and identify targets of opportunity and methods to communicate with these agencies/institutions;
  • In close coordination with Programmes, produce, edit, and publish IOM audio-visual content to support the reach and impact of IOM including press releases, human interest stories, situation reports, reports, newsletters, infographics, web graphics, factsheets, talking points, ‘If Asked’ documents, videos and documentaries, and crisis communication material, for IOM and external platforms. With clear and targeted audiences and messaging;
  • Independently produce storyboards, scripts, and a variety of audio-visual multimedia products to engage target audiences. Products could include social media edits, b-roll packages, and explainer videos;
  • Engage with the UN Country Team’s Communication Group and other relevant actors and lead in developing media messages on key issues by working together on campaigns and issues of joint concern;
  • Monitor social media online and document relevant questions, conversations, and trends and disseminate key analysis and updates to the senior management team for awareness and consideration;
  • Follow local media, including radio, TV, and print, to identify information, perceptions, and misinformation among the media and their audiences and coordinate responses with senior management team;
  • Undertake content-gathering field trips to take photographs and video footage and gather material for multimedia content showcasing IOM field activities and community, govermment needs. Ensure that Media and Communications content is clear and concise and that digital informed consent is secured;
  • Contribute to Country Office Knowledge Management; and
  • Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Graphic Design, or other related disciplines; with a minimum of 5 years of related professional experience; or
  • High School Degree in the above field with a minimum of 7 years of related professional experience or an equivalent combination of education and training.

EXPERIENCE

  • Experience as a writer, editor, and content producer/manager in international Journalism and/or public information roles;
  • Experience in digital communications and social media;
  • Experience in corporate writing and editing;
  • Experience in managing donor visibility;
  • Experience with media liaison;
  • Experience in humanitarian communications;
  • Experience in working in the UN or other International organizations; and
  • Experience in photography and videography, both shooting and editing, is an advantage.

SKILLS

  • Skills in graphic design, particularly using Adobe Creative Cloud Applications (Aftereffects, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign & XD), Lightroom, and familiar with web design tools and principles, is an advantage;
  • Skills in photography and videography, both shooting and editing, an advantage;
  • Demonstrated gender awareness and gender sensitivity;
  • High level of professionalism and ability to work under pressure and adhere to strict deadlines in a complex and fast-changing environment; and,
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively and harmoniously with colleagues from varied cultures and professional backgrounds.
LANGUAGES
  • Fluency in English is required, knowledge of Tok Pisin is an advantage
IOM’s official languages are English, French and Spanish.
Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.
