The role of the Mental and Psychosocial Wellbeing Consultant covers the design and coordination of the strategy of the Whitaker Peace & Development Initiative (WPDI) pertaining to mental and psychosocial wellbeing, including programs on trauma and support to programs on Sexual & Reproductive Health (SRH), sports and others. The incumbent will work under the direct supervision of the Liaison Officer for the UNESCO Special Envoy for Peace and Reconciliation.
Background
WPDI was founded in 2012 by artist, social activist Forest Whitaker, who is the UNESCO Special Envoy for Peace & Reconciliation as well as member of the United Nations Advocacy Group for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). WPDI is a non-governmental organization that operates in countries and regions impacted by violence and poverty in close partnership with UNESCO and other United Nations agencies, including UN Women. Our mission is to empower underprivileged youths and women living in these vulnerable places to become peacemakers, leaders and entrepreneurs in their communities. We help them become (a) mediators who will address tensions and conflict between and within communities with competence and confidence, (b) community organizers who are equipped to reach out to other youth to undertake educational and cultural projects to promote peace, dialogue and tolerance, (c) entrepreneurs who can create economic opportunities for themselves and for their communities.
For such empowerment to be effective, it is essential for underprivileged youths, women and other vulnerable groups, to have the means to respond to their mental and psychosocial needs, notably in terms of trauma, which is indispensable for achieving such key UNESCO objectives as youth development and gender equality. Having observed that population residing in fragility- and conflict-affected areas often lack access to mental and psychosocial wellbeing services, WPDI seeks to strengthen its capacity to deliver services in this regard and, more generally, advocate for the recognition of mental and psychosocial wellbeing as integral to promoting peace and sustainable development in contexts marked by violence, poverty or marginalization.
