The International Water Management Institute (IWMI), a CGIAR Research Center is looking for a highly self-motivated researcher to carry out gender, youth and social inclusion research under the Water, Growth and Inclusion Strategic Program as National Researcher – Gender, Social Inclusion and Youth at its office in Kathmandu, Nepal. The position holder is expected to plan, design and undertake research for development (R4D) on gender and social inclusion issues related to water, land, food and energy systems, and climate change. The person will provide gender and social inclusion research expertise, coordinate and engage with diverse partners and stakeholders, and disseminate research results to target audiences. The person will also be expected to initiate research for development ideas in collaboration with colleagues in the Nepal office and, more widely, as part of IWMI’s Strategic Program on Water, Growth and Inclusion.
Duties AND Responsibilities:
- Plan, design and implement research on gender, social inclusion, disability and youth in water resources management, migration, agriculture, renewable energy, and climate change related areas in Nepal.
- Review and synthesize relevant literature on water, nutrition, WASH, and rural and urban transformation in Nepal from gender and social inclusion perspectives.
- Prepare journal articles, progress reports, research reports, policy briefs and blogs.
- Proactively support IWMI’s efforts at establishing and strengthening partnerships and networks with the public and private sector, community institutions and women’s and youth organizations, enabling gender and social transformative actions in water and natural resources sectors.
- Provide gender and social inclusion technical inputs to proposal development.
- Support the dissemination of IWMI’s research findings and impacts at local, national and international conferences and other public fora.
- Coordinate with relevant Project Leaders, Research Group Leaders and Strategic Program Directors at IWMI and project partners/work package leads during the preparation of journal articles, research reports and blogs.
- Coordinate with Program Management Office, Human Resource, Admin/finance, and Publications and Knowledge Management, as well as other relevant departments of IWMI to ensure necessary support and guidance related to research project management.
- Maintain good working relationships with IWMI’s partners in Nepal including at three levels of government, development partners, civil society organizations, private sector and research institutions and other stakeholders.
- Regularly interact with national and regional networks, partners and stakeholders.
- Represent IWMI in policy, science and practice-related knowledge forums and meetings in Nepal.
Requirements
EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- A PhD and/or an Master’s degree in a social science discipline, including but not limited to gender studies, sociology, human geography, anthropology, development studies and/or PhD and/or an MSc in water resources or agriculture or environmental science with a specialization in gender and social justice.
- At least 5 years of proven experience and technical competence working on gender and social inclusion research design and implementation.
- Demonstrated experience and skills in producing peer-reviewed journal articles.
- Ability to deliver research outputs as per research project’s workplan.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and capacity to work in a multidisciplinary and multi-cultural environment.
- Experience in developing concept notes and research proposals on water, food, energy, and land resources using a gender and social inclusion lens.
- Good understanding of development policy and institutional issues in relation to water resources management, irrigation, agrarian livelihoods, migration and youth engagement in Nepal.
- Capacity to deliver high-quality reports in English.
- Excellent communications skills and the ability to explain complex issues clearly to diverse stakeholders.
- Fluent verbal and written communications skills in English.

This is a nationally recruited position and only candidates who are eligible to work in Nepal will be considered.
