JOB DETAIL

The International Water Management Institute (IWMI), a CGIAR Research Center is looking for a competent, self-motivated, and dynamic candidate to join as National Researcher- Water Resources management to be based at its Kathmandu office. Under the supervision of the country Representative, the researcher will contribute to, and lead, water resources-related research in the portfolio of IWMIs Research Group on Sustainable Water Infrastructure and Ecosystems. The position holder is expected to coordinate and contribute to research for development (R4D) on water storage, water-based adaptation to climate change, climate resilient water management, and water supply for domestic and productive uses. The person will collaborate closely with the government, research partners and stakeholders, including the private sector and networks of youth, indigenous communities, women, and water users in Nepal, to build capacity and enhance adoption and scaling of water solutions. The person may also be required to support national and regional initiatives.

Duties AND Responsibilities:

  • Plan, design and implement research on water resources management, water supply, and provide technical inputs to IWMI programs within areas of expertise, which includes, implement hydrological/water resource modelling of river basins using open source free modelling tools such as JAMS-J2000, SWAT, SPHY, HEC HMS, PyWR.
  • Coordinate and manage the Nepal element of research projects, ensuring that related work is planned and executed consistently with agreed timetables and that progress is reported to relevant stakeholders.
  • Use research findings to engage next users and help ensure uptake of research results by policymakers and other stakeholders.
  • Prepare research reports, journal articles, presentations, policy briefs, guidelines, blogs and other scientific products for dissemination to wider policy and public audiences.
  • Lead the co-design, with IWMI partners and CGIAR Centers, of technical training workshops, knowledge forums and Community of Practice of water professionals.
  • Support country and regional communication/outreach activities in coordination with Country Representative, relevant research colleagues, and the Information and Knowledge Management group.
  • Ensure integration of cross-cutting thematic areas such as gender equality and social inclusion (GESI), digital innovations and water data in project activities.
  • Represent IWMI in strategic meetings and events.

Requirements

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • PhD in hydrology, hydrogeology, water resources management, civil engineering or related discipline, or equivalent experience and deliverables with 2-3 years’ experience.
  • Experience in diverse hydrological and water resource models, tools and techniques.
  • Experience with geographic information systems (GIS) and other spatial data software for hydrological purposes and reasonable knowledge of a programming language (e.g. R, Java, Python).
  • Technical competence in hydrological/water resource models; operationalization and interpretation of modelling results.
  • Experience of quantitative data collection and analysis, and writing scientific and research papers, blogs in the field of water resources and water-based adaptation practices.
  • Ability to effectively manage and coordinate research projects, ensuring timely delivery of outputs and results.
  • Experience of working with multi-stakeholders in the water sector.
  • Advanced knowledge of all main MS Office applications.
  • Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams and foster teamwork in field-based research.
  • Willingness to travel in remote areas with limited facilities.
  • Familiarity with gender and social inclusion issues of Nepal.
  • Familiarity with the federal system of Nepal and the resulting restructuring of the water resources and irrigation sector.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.

This is a nationally recruited position and only candidates who are eligible to work in Nepal will be considered. The duration of the contract will initially be for a period of three years with the possibility of extension.
