Result of Service

The work of the individual contractor will assist UNCTAD in the implementation of the Programme,
particularly in the operation and management of the TraBio, as well as assisting in the organization of events and completion of two studies (ocean and the blue bioeconomy and “A comprehensive data analysis of biotrade for the AfCFTA).

Duties and Responsibilities

In coordination with relevant staff and other UNCTAD consultants and contractors, and under the supervision of the Project Officer, the individual contractor will:

(1) Support the operation, management and dissemination of the Trade and Biodiversity statistical (TraBio) tool:
a. Reviewing and updating information/data as requested by UNCTADstat and other relevant experts
b. Liaising with DSIB for ensuring the TraBio is updated and operational, including the online database and visualization tool
c. Supporting the updating, operation and dissemination of TraBio as well as drafting and publishing of reports, studies, news items or others as required

(2) Assist in the development of a study on “ocean and the blue bio-economy, shifting from negative to positive subsidies and addressing disincentives for compliance” (hereafter “ocean and the blue bio-economy study”). Specifically, the incumbent will:

a. Assist in conducting desk research on the topic
b. Assist in scheduling and holding interviews and if needed, a roundtable or other, with experts for identifying specific themes to develop/enhance and partners to collaborate with UNCTAD
c. Support drafting an outline of the study to be discussed with, as well as compiling all comments provided by UNCTAD colleagues from BioTrade and Ocean Economy
d. Support the development of the first draft of the ocean and the blue bioeconomy study
e. Assist in the peer review of the draft by UNCTAD and other experts, including the compilation of comments received and addressed
f. Support the development of the drafts and final study, which incorporates and addresses the comments received by UNCTAD and experts, as well as complies with UNCTAD’s procedures and guidelines
g. Assist in the drafting of a brief on the key findings/recommendations of the study which complies with UNCTAD’s procedures and guidelines.
h. Assist in addressing any relevant comment received during the policy clearance of the document/brief, as required
i. Support efforts to disseminate the work undertaken (e.g., social media, news item, events, etc), as required

(3) Support review, policy clearance and online publication of the following studies: “Production and trade trends in the algae/seaweed sector the links with food security, and the role of women in the value chain”; and “The fisheries sector and the energy transition”. Additionally, the contractor will prepare two presentation decks on the above-mentioned studies.

(4) Support the development of the following study “A comprehensive data analysis of biotrade for the AfCFTA” in accordance with UNCTAD’s procedures and guidelines, as well as compile all comments from the peer review

(5) Support the organization, the logistical arrangements and drafting the meeting proceedings for the following events:
a. the 6th BioTrade Stakeholder Steering Committee (6SSC) meeting
b. Trainings on TraBio and statistical-related events/roundtables
c. Launch of the report A comprehensive data analysis of biotrade for the AfCFTA

Qualifications/special skills

First university degree (Bachelor or equivalent) in Trade, International Relations, Economics, Law, or related field is required.
At least 2 years of work experience in economics, trade and/or environment is required.
Experience in ocean economy is desired.
Experience of working on statistical tools related to trade and/or the ocean economy is desired.
Prior experience in organizing events and assisting the drafting of reports/studies within the United Nations is desired

Languages

Fluency oral and written in English and Spanish are required.
