Do you have knowledge of issues relating to the surveillance industry? Do you want to use your people management skills to lead a team to protect human rights defenders from unlawful surveillance?

JOB PURPOSE

Working as part of the Disrupting Surveillance Team (DST) in Amnesty Tech, the purpose of this post is to lead on the on the planning and management of all activities of the Security Lab. The Security Lab is a team of technologists that use digital forensics research techniques to investigate the surveillance industry and spyware.

The Operations Manager of the Security Lab will co-lead a team of up to 8 people. Working closely with the Head of Research and Strategy, the Operations Manager will provide leadership and lead on staff management for the Security Lab, which is responsible for digital forensics research and tool development.

The postholder will join at a time of expansion for the Security Lab as it grows to face the increased challenges presented by surveillance technologies to the work of human rights defenders around the world. This is an exciting time to be joining a growing team that has a track record of high impact research and campaigning.

ABOUT YOU

You will have experience providing strong leadership to a team, with a demonstrated ability to set strategies, manage projects and budgets, and take decisions. You will have excellent communication skills, able to explain complex issues clearly for internal and external audiences.

Digital forensics skills are not required for this post, though knowledge of issues relating to the surveillance industry and human rights is an advantage.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To provide strong leadership and manage a globally distributed team of the Security Lab, focused on technical investigations, tool development, and capacity building. The postholder will oversee the planning, coordination and distribution of work within the team, setting priorities and plans while also developing a work culture that is collaborate and considers the wellbeing of staff.
  • Manage research projects of the Security Lab, working closely with the Head of Research and Strategy
  • Management of reporting on activities and impact of the Security Lab, working with the Manager of the DST to ensure compliance with impact assessment processes and to meet reporting requirements of donors.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Experience in staff management, ideally leading teams remote of researchers (does not need to be experience of managing technologists/technical research projects).
  • Knowledge of the issues of targeted surveillance and its impact on human rights.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, concisely and diplomatically in English, both orally and in writing; other languages are an asset.
