The Legal Department of IFC (CLED), under the General Counsel, is responsible for providing legal and policy advice to the IFC Board, its Management and client departments on operational, advisory, and corporate matters. Specifically, CLED supports client departments in (i) the delivery of IFC’s annual program of financing private sector projects in emerging markets, advisory services, as well as early stage engagements and pre-investment project development work to identify opportunities for private sector investments and creating markets (“Upstream”); (ii) project portfolio management(including jeopardy projects and projects in litigation); (iii) the delivery and design of structured finance products, sub-national lending, equity and quasi-equity and public-private partnerships, and investments in funds, as well as platform products; (iv) advising on corporate policy and operational matters; and (v) knowledge management and training. To support Legal Operations, IFC is recruiting a qualified legal professional experienced in legal department operations and technology. The Operations Officer position would be based in IFC HQ (Washington DC), and will report to Chief Counsel, Legal Operations, and work with the Global Lead, Knowledge Management, the CLED KM team and other lawyers in the Legal Department as needed.
Roles and Responsibilities:
• Provide project support for key initiatives and insight regarding emerging legal technology and identify opportunities for transformation (standardization/optimization of process, moving the right tasks to the right place, automation, and use of technology to deliver) and takes lead on providing inputs for decision-making about approach and proposed solutions CLED to facilitate the adoption of innovative technologies into the IFC operating model.
• Manage the legal technology ecosystem, including relationships with external technology vendors, including designing, and evaluating any proof of concept/pilot alongside the program/project team and the relevant solution provider.
• Oversee and strategically assess Matter Management, Knowledge Management, Document Management, and Information Governance systems and protocols.
• Identify, create, and improve legal workflows, focusing on efficiency, scale, and quality control.
• Develop methodologies and analytics strategies to leverage data sources to address department and firm-driven business problem/questions.
• Assist with the implementation and management of legal department metrics, benchmarking, and reporting, including technology adoption and utilization metrics.
• Working closely the Chief Counsel Legal Operations and relevant legal operations staff as well as with the enterprise-level IT, Change Management, Learning and Communications teams to ensure that the right change approach is taken with the team.
• Support CLED management with operationalizing and management of its strategic priorities and work program to deliver results and impact. Partner with Information Technology to drive technology solutions across the legal department and function as the primary liaison with Information Technology to align with the enterprise technology ecosystem.
• Serve as the business system owner including manage the vendor selection, implementation, testing, global roll-out and training for any new software and tools in this space.
Selection Criteria
• Degree in law, and 12 or more years of relevant practical experience with implementing emerging technologies for legal services, in legal department operations and technology.
• Understand areas of technology such as automation, AI, cloud computing and big data.
• Fully proficient in computer skills, particularly in using word processing software, information databases, intranet and internet services and resources
• Demonstrated ability to assume multiple roles and tasks to meet changing business needs with an ability to foresee, troubleshoot, escalate, and effectively resolve conflicting issues and challenges.
• Demonstrated ability to assess risk in a practical and responsible manner and make well-reasoned decisions.
• Excellent interpersonal skills demonstrated ability to deal sensitively in a multicultural environment, to build and maintain effective working relations with clients and colleagues across IFC, and to work effectively in teams.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with quick turnaround expectations.
• Willingness to travel within and outside India frequently and on short notice.
• Professional integrity and sound judgment in handling confidential information.
• Excellent communications skills and the capacity to present both written and oral ideas clearly, concisely, and persuasively at senior levels.
