The internship is located in the Global Programme on Implementing the Organized Crime Convention in the Conference Support Section (CSS), Organized Crime and Illicit Trafficking Branch (OCB), Division for Treaty Affairs (DTA), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Vienna, Austria. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is mandated to assist Member States in their fight against illicit drugs, crime and terrorism. Transnational organized crime manifests in many forms, including as trafficking in drugs, firearms, cultural property and even persons. At the same time, organized crime groups exploit human mobility to smuggle migrants, undermine financial systems through money laundering and use information and communication technology for criminal purposes. Organized crime yields high profits for its culprits and results in high risks for individuals who fall victim to it. From a sustainable development perspective, organized crime has devastating effects, it threatens peace and human security, violates human rights and undermines the economic, social, cultural, political and civil development of societies around the world. The Organized Crime Convention (UNTOC) represents the principal legally binding instrument focused on preventing and combating transnational organized crime. It is a landmark treaty that is close to attaining universal adherence. UNODC works to support states across the world in implementing UNTOC through developing and strengthening comprehensive and inclusive legislation, policies and strategies against organized crime. Human rights and gender equality are intrinsically linked to combating and preventing organized crime effectively. Only by looking at the phenomenon of organized crime in a comprehensive manner, including through a gender and human rights lens, is it possible to grasp its multiple facets, manifestations and consequences, allowing to prevent and combat it in an effective way. This has been recognized in several international instruments, including resolution 26/3 of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice and the recently adopted resolution 11/2 of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC), which encourages States to mainstream gender and human rights into their legislation, policies, programmes and other initiatives against organized crime. In order to support States in the development of comprehensive and inclusive organized crime strategies, as well as in the effective integration of intersectional gender equality and human rights considerations in the development of legislation, policies and strategies against organized crime, UNODC developed an Organized Crime Strategy Toolkit for Developing High-Impact Strategies and a Toolkit on Mainstreaming Gender and Human Rights in the Implementation of UNTOC. Within this framework, under the guidance of a Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Officer, the intern will support the work of the Global Programme on Implementing the Organized Crime Convention, with a focus on the implementation and dissemination of the two aforementioned Toolkits. Daily responsibilities will vary and depend on the intern’s background.
