The UNV Regional Office for East and Southern Africa (ESARO) provides oversight and strategic guidance to the UNV Field Units (FUs) in the region and is accountable for the placement of UN Volunteers mobilized for UN Agencies, Funds, and Programmes (AFPs) focused on peace, development, and humanitarian needs. Furthermore, the Regional Office (RO) represents, and strategically positions UNV and bring UNV’s services and solutions closer to its partners from governments, UN entities, civil society, and the private sector. The Regional Office, with the support of the Volunteer Advisory Services Section, promotes volunteerism. The RO based in Nairobi, Kenya, oversees UNV’s engagement in 23 countries of the East and Southern Africa region.
Under the supervision of the Manager, Regional Office, the Partnership Analyst supports UNV- ESARO in partnership development and management activities in the region, working in close collaboration with UNV Regional Office team and Field Units. He/ She scans the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Frameworks (USDCFs) or Cooperation Frameworks, Country Programme Documents (CPDs) and other Development Frameworks of UN-AFPs in the region, identifies key strategic priorities for the United Nations and recommends opportunities and priority entry points for engagement with UN partners.  He/ She supports ESARO in harvesting, analyzing, and documenting specific intelligence on each partner, identifies partners/client needs as a basis for developing partnership for volunteer mobilization and placements. She/he identifies and informs ERCS about potential external partnerships related to the full funding programme and the Special Voluntary Fund (including Member States, foundation private sector, academia and Civil society organizations,. He/She supports ESARO to prepare mission documentation including asks and offers, briefing, notes, speaking points, inputs UN partners information in the Customer Relationship Management Platform (CRMP) and its day-day management. She/he exchanges regularly with other units and regional offices, including the External Relations and Communications Section (ERCS) at UNV Headquarters in Bonn and the UNV New York Office.
Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Support Partnership development and management in ESARO 
  • Scan and map the UNSDCFs (Cooperation Frameworks), Country Programme Documents (CPDs) of other development frameworks of UN-AFPs in the region, identify key strategic priorities and recommend opportunities and entry points for engagement with UN partners in ESARO.
  • Harvest, analyze and document an Agency specific intelligence on the UN’s development, humanitarian, and peace engagements in ESARO to support volunteer mobilization and placement with UN-AFPs.
  • Support ESARO in identifying opportunities for partnerships with Member States, the private sector, and other partners for joint programmes and /or resource mobilization including the full funding programme and the Special Voluntary Fund.
  • Lead and/or support preparation and delivery of UN partner presentations at RO level.
  • Prepare quarterly and bi-annual UN partners snapshots.
  • Support the design of innovative capacity development initiatives for Field Unit personnel to enable them to enhance their analytical, communication, monitoring and reporting skills, competencies, and expertise.

2. Support Research and Policy Analysis of the UN system landscape in ESARO to inform partnerships enhancement and diversification 

  • Undertake research and provide political, socioeconomic analysis on partner intelligence to inform volunteer mobilization projections and to position UNV with key partners.
  • Review and translate the yearly UN Volunteer Mobilization business outlook produced by UNV-New York Office to ESARO regional context to support partnership building, diversification, and Volunteer mobilization.
  • Support ESARO in developing partnerships offers to the United Nations Agencies, Funds and Programme (UN-AFPs) in various thematic areas (e.g., crisis response, inclusion, social protection, climate change, youth engagement, etc.,) and/or potential Special Programme
  • Gather strategic information on regional and country level development and humanitarian partners, emergency response programmes, and translate this information into tangible actions for the ESARO team.
  • Identify potential resource mobilization opportunities for UNV in the region based on research and awareness of traditional and non-traditional external partners.
  • Under ERCS guidance, may support providing input for drafting of partnerships concept notes, briefs and presentations related to new partners deploying national fully funding UN Volunteers.
  • Monitor the implementation of joint action plans linked to signed global MoUs with UN partners and monitor implementation of related regional action plans.
  • Support the development of relevant briefs and concept notes to position UNV and volunteerism in a renewed fashion that is attractive to UN partners to fund and/or support.

3. Contribute to knowledge building and sharing across ESARO 

  • Collate UN partnership advice and intelligence to support Field units and Non-Field Units in their engagements with partners and facilitate knowledge-sharing and knowledge management within ESARO.
  • Collect and analyze data on partnership and disseminate findings to ESARO team.
  • Support ESARO to prepare mission documentation including asks and offers, briefing, notes, speaking points, etc.
  • Prepare meeting notes and update regional UN partners’ CRM pages and lead day-to-day management of Regional Partners CRM pages.
  • Contribute ESARO inputs to global knowledge products on partnerships.
  • Support in the drafting and developing of ESARO knowledge products on partnerships and volunteerism promotion in the region.

4. Strengthening UNV’s positioning as a solution provider for UN Humanitarian Partners in ESARO 

  • Build and strengthen collaboration between UNV and humanitarian partners supporting regional and sub-regional initiatives through active engagement. Develop co-branded volunteer solutions, offers, and tailored special initiatives with partners.
  • Position UNV as a partner of choice in regional strategies, with an emphasis on engaging people with disabilities, women empowerment, and youth, integrating UN Volunteers /volunteerism in UN humanitarian partners regional strategic/operational documents, such as in strategic plans, programme documents, in HR, talent and/or other strategies.
  • Collect necessary UN partner information to design outreach materials and prepare concise and impactful presentations and offers to UN partners, focused on promoting volunteerism and increased mobilization of volunteers, and/or responding to UN partners identified needs.
  • Provide support for assessing partnerships through feedback from regular dialogue with the relevant UN partners and UNV Field Units.
  • Benchmark human capital solutions humanitarian UN partners rely on to ensure UNV offer remains fit for purpose and make recommendations to adapt if necessary UNV offer.

Required Skills and Experience
Education:
  • Advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in international affairs/international development, economics, development studies, social sciences, or a related field.
  • A first-level university degree (bachelor’s degree) in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience will be given due consideration in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Experience:
  • Minimum of 2 years (with master’s degree) or 4 years (with bachelor’s degree) of relevant experience at national and/or international level in development, international relations, social sciences, economics, research and information management or related fields;
  • Experience working with partners, including development/governments/UN Entities, and/or on partnerships approaches and/or strategies, and/or partner relations is required.
  • Hands on experience in research and policy analysis, compilation and synthetization of information in coherent and succinct formats, for producing and analyzing think pieces, proposals and other knowledge products is required.
  • Knowledge and experience in the United Nations and/or UNDP or another UN Entity is desired.
  • Experience in the use of business intelligence tools developing communication materials with visuals is required.
  • Experience working in an international context, and specifically in the East and Southern Africa region, is a distinct advantage.
  • Experience related to volunteerism, volunteer management and working with volunteers is an asset.
  • Fluency in English
  • Proficiency in another official UN language is an asset.
