As a Principal Shift Operator, you will contribute to the safe, efficient and reliable operation of the ITER facility, plant systems, and Tokamak on a 24 hour, 7 day per week basis, by leading a shift team of operators.

Background information:

The Operations Division is responsible for developing plans, procedures, and implementation of commissioning, operation and maintenance of the ITER Tokamak and plant systems. A team of operators will monitor and control the various plant systems and Tokamak 24/7 from the control room, conduct regular equipment inspections, supervise maintenance activities, and take all necessary actions to ensure safe and reliable function.

• Monitors and operates plant control systems and safety systems, followings procedures to ensure safe and reliable operation of the plant;
• Responds to alarms by following the appropriate procedures, taking necessary recovery action including calling in appropriate staff;
• Configures and operates systems according to operating instructions to support the experimental and operational needs;
• Informs the System Operations Responsible Officer of any events or conditions that could influence plant operations and safety;
• Leads a rostered team of operators, organises and participates in patrols, inspections, and the identification and resolution of operational and safety issues;
• Writes operating and commissioning test procedures and reports;
• Performs commissioning tasks according to test procedures, records results and diagnoses faults and failures;
• Operates the systems, following dedicated procedures, to maintain or bring the ITER facility into a safe state in the event of an accident or incident during shift operations activities;
• Performs Lock Out, Tag Out (LOTO) actions on equipment according to operating orders, ensuring hazardous energy sources are isolated and rendered inoperative;
• May be requested to perform other duties in support of the project;
• May be required to work outside the ITER Organization (IO) reference working hours, including nights, week-ends and public holidays.

• Ensures safe and efficient operation, achieving required system reliability, and availability of the service provided on-time and within defined schedule;
• Ensures all activities are properly authorised and tracked within defined timelines;
• Performs periodic inspections of processes (quality of record sheets, round monitoring, LOTO performance, etc.) to ensure accuracy and quality;
• Attends daily operation coordination meetings between Commissioning, Operations, Maintenance and Construction and issues reports accordingly;
• Effective allocation of operations and commissioning tasks to the operators.

• Professional Experience:
  • Minimum 7 years’ experience in plant equipment operation or a Superintendent role in the field of large scale facilities within complex international environments or projects.
• Education:
  • Bachelors’ degree or equivalent in technical or engineering field or other relevant discipline;
  • The required education degree may be substituted by extensive professional experience involving similar work responsibilities and/or additional training certificates in relevant domains.
• Language requirements:
  • Fluent in English (written and spoken);
  • Spoken French language skills will be considered advantageous.

• Specific requirements:
  • Possession of a driving license valid in France is required. No commuting vehicle will be provided by the ITER Organization.
• Technical experience and demonstrated competencies in:
  • Training and certifications in a minimum of two of the following: Lock Out, Tag Out systems, high voltage electrical equipment, chemical risks, cryogenic, high pressure, and in areas implementing radiological protection;
  • Commissioning and Operations: operation of cooling water systems, cryogenic plant, petrochemical industry, pharmaceutical production, electricity generation, nuclear or steam propulsion equipment, nuclear fusion or other large scale research facility experience;
  • Safety: Ensuring the practical application of safety standards and requirements;
  • Problem solving: assessing problems and reaching practical solutions in a consistent way to reach project objectives;
  • Interface management: identify, maintain, and / or resolve technical and functional interfaces to reach Project goals;
  • Writing and presentation: write and review contractual and technical documents in the domain of expertise, document and transmit knowledge with data, clarity, and precision.

• Implements the technical control of the Protection Important Activities, as well as their propagation to the entire supply chain;
• May be requested to work on beryllium-containing components. In this case, you will be required to follow the established ITER Beryllium Management Program for working safely with beryllium. Training and support will be provided by the ITER Organization;
• May be requested to be part of any of the project/construction teams and to perform other duties in support of the project;
• Informs the IO Director-General or Department Head of any important and urgent issues that cannot be handled by line management and that may jeopardize the achievement of the Project’s objectives.
• For staff expected to perform on-call, shift hours, or other work outside ITER Organization reference working hours, including nights, weekends, and public holidays, the possession of a driving license valid in France is required. No commuting vehicle will be provided by the ITER Organization.
