The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a non-profit, bipartisan public policy organization established in 1962 to provide strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decision makers concerned with global security and prosperity. Over the years, it has grown to be one of the largest organizations of its kind, with a staff of some 200 employees, including more than 120 analysts working to address the changing dynamics of international security across the globe.
The Project on Trade and Technology is a new initiative at CSIS that will lead the Center’s work on forward-looking trade and technology issues. Topics of interest include trade and investment controls, emerging and foundational technology controls, anti-coercion trade remedies, and supply chain resilience in advanced technological industries. The program’s mission is to illuminate the role of trade in foreign policy and how trade and technology strategies support U.S. power and national security. This program focuses primarily, though not exclusively, on the transatlantic alliance.
In addition to producing a unique scholarship, this project will also grow external partnerships through public events, speaking engagements, and closed-door workshops. This project will also engage frequently with foreign embassies in D.C. by partnering on workshops and events.
The Project on Trade and Technology is recruiting a full-time program coordinator and research assistant (PCRA) who is highly motivated, professional, and has a strong interest in the geopolitics of trade policy and advanced technologies. The PRCA will assist in day-to-day operations, including event planning, outreach efforts, grant writing, and other administrative assistance. The PCRA will also provide research assistance on substantive projects through writing, research, data/trend analysis, and project development. While the majority of this position will entail administrative work, a motivated self-starter will have ample opportunities to support research initiatives, publish written articles, and develop a unique and individual brand. This in-person position at CSIS headquarters will entail a significant amount of event organization and logistics, requiring acute attention to detail and an aptitude for diplomatic engagement.
The minimum salary for this position is $65,000.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the following:
Administrative 65%
• Coordinate event planning and logistical execution for high-level private meetings, large public conferences and events, and other program activities
• Draft and edit correspondence and communications to a variety of internal and external stakeholders
• Assist in preparation of fundraising proposals and reports to donors
• Manage the publication process for short articles, reports, and other digital products
• Assist with outreach activities and contact management
• Assist with managing day-to-day office operations in person
• Represent the Economics Program at internal and outside events as needed
Research 35%
• Monitor trends and developments in trade and technology
• Edit and evaluate publications and research content from interns, staff, and outside contributors, and provide feedback, when necessary
• Conduct research on technology strategy, U.S. export controls and investment screening developments, transatlantic trade and economic developments, and more
• Provide research, draft text, and graphics or figures for program publications, including short, written analyses and long reports
KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:
• Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred
• Academic degree or work experience in foreign affairs preferred
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Minimum 2-3 years related experience
• Comfortable in a fast-paced environment and able to thrive under pressure
• Proactive problem solver with strong decision-making skills
• Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail
• Strong communication skills, including the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from constituency groups, media, governmental entities, and the general public
