We are seeking a Program Director for a 2-year-regular position (renewable) to work within the Europe Regional Office at the International Vaccine Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. (Duty station: Stockholm, Sweden)
Job Description

This job is responsible for securing and delivering vaccine development projects with high quality standards and developing new programs/ projects opportunities to ensure successful delivery of IVI mission on vaccines development. In addition it will be required to provide high level support for the IERO Head in managing the European office as well as ensuring extensive collaboration and consistent communication with internal and external partners under the highest scientific, operational, and ethical standards.

Key Roles & Responsibilities
1. As a Program Director, lead and manage, vaccine development projects and related activities in IERO, in line with the strategic plan and IVI processes
  • Lead the development of grant proposal for vaccine development projects until approval by Donors
  • Manage and Lead as principal investigator, or as senior advisor / mentor to research scientists in the IERO, clinical studies and other vaccine development projects as applicable
2. Develop agenda for new and current funding
  • As a Program Director, ensure program funding and diversity of IVI’s portfolio through new funding opportunities from EU sources and beyond, with internal/external collaborators, in line with IVI strategy, as well as provide support and advice on proposals and projects, including those driven by other units and Principal Investigators within IVI
  • Responsible for ensuring that (with Program Management and Strategy Head) IERO Scientific projects and execution are aligned with IVI 2022-2026 strategy and annual Institutional Objectives and coordinated with the heads of other Units, CARE, EPIC and Laboratory Science
3. Act as deputy to IERO Head, if required
  • Support IERO Head as a deputy with day-to-day management of the European office incl. cross-departmental grant development and project execution, representation of IERO at internal meetings, conflict resolution, if required
  • Contribute to communicating with the board and scientific advisory group regarding scientific questions as directed by the IERO Head.
  • Act as External Representative of IVI and IERO Head as needed (e.g., Government, donors, policy makers, collaborators)
4. Support IVI projects and programs with activity in IERO and lead by Principal investigators not located in IERO
  • Support the successful execution of vaccine development project led by other Principal Investigators not located in the IERO
  • Provide local oversight of the project team members located in IERO and working on project lead by Principal investigators not located in IERO. Ensure that the relevant team members located in IERO are well trained and that activities performed in IERO are accomplished in a timely and successful manner (cost-effective, follow ethical standards, and follow IVI process and high-quality standards)
  • Ensure that for all projects, all necessary reporting to European donors and stakeholders are done on time and as per requirements
5. Support IERO management
  • Build and develop sustainable talent pipeline and development including attracting and retaining especially highly talented personnel
  • Contribute to development and/or management of research scientists for complex grants or projects to ensure good coordination and execution of the grants/projects
  • Ensure sufficient grant funding is raised to ensure functionality of project team and beyond
  • Ensure adequate communication of project results incl. peer-reviewed articles, donor reports, presentations at meetings/conferences
6. Support IVI institutional objectives (annual)
  • Engage in training, internal scientific, program management, and educational activities
  • Provide mentorship for research scientists and other team members in IERO
  • Active participation and attendance of Scientific Advisory Group meeting (may be virtual)
7. Support IVI projects and programs with activity in IERO and lead by Principal investigators not located in IERO
Job Requirements and Qualifications
1. Education Requirements
  • MD; PhD (Immunology, Molecular Biology, Virology, Public Health, Epidemiology, Statistics)
2. Related Field Work Experience
  • 15 + years of experience working in vaccine related scientific field (immunology, molecular biology, virology, clinical development, epidemiology/vaccine effectiveness, etc …) in a PDP, Biotech, Big Pharma, government institute or leading University
    (7+ years of people management experience)
3. Technical and Professional Skills / Knowledge
  • Ability to successfully develop grant proposal and successfully manage grants as a Principal investigator, including complex studies and projects with multiple international partners.
  • Good people and management skills.
  • Knowledge and background in vaccines, medicine, and global health which enables to be a strong representative for IVI to the public, IVI’s member states, and scientific community
  • Experience working in Europe with strong relationships to stakeholders in the region
  • Strong knowledge of clinical development and research implementation preferably with vaccines and in a developing country setting
  • Knowledge/experience in GCP required and knowledge of other GxPs desirable
  • Good knowledge of epidemiology, statistics, on-site developing countries expertise, cultural sensitivity, communication skills, and presentation skills.
  • Good Knowledge of regulatory environment and requirements (EU, National, and WHO standards).
  • Track record of success in generating funds from public or private sector donors preferred.
4. Language Proficiency
  • Fluency in English and in at least one other European Language
