The humanitarian community in Somalia has responded to five major crises (2005-2006, 2008-2009, 2011, 2017 and ongoing 2022-2023); with the 2022-2023 emergency during which the international food assistance averted the declaration of Famine. Notably, in over two decades, the pastoral, agropastoral and agricultural livelihoods within Somalia have fluctuated between Famine/Emergency/Crisis and Food Secure/Stressed. As a result of a combination of shocks such as poor rainfall, global price fluctuations and eruption of resourced-based or regional inter-state conflict, more than 6 million people in Somalia are projected in June 2023 to remain food-insecure with 40.000 people are expected to face Catastrophic hunger (IPC 5).
The overall goal of the Somalia FSC is to be the primary source of information on the on-going humanitarian response to address food insecurity and facilitate the development of a strategic vision.
The Food Security Cluster/Sector Coordinator in Somalia will work impartially with more than 140 members of the Food Security Cluster (FSC) and represent all members of the group equally, and. S/he will work closely with the UN Humanitarian/Resident Coordinator and the Office of Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) or their designated official, and with all other humanitarian stakeholders including other cluster leads.
The incumbent will play a vital role in ensuring timely, coherent, and effective food security interventions by mobilizing and supporting stakeholders to deliver a coordinated and strategic response to a humanitarian crisis.
