Context
The Regional Thematic Unit for Climate Action and Mobility (CAD RTU) provides thematic oversight and support on regional efforts to address the immediate and long-term impacts of climate change on human mobility while advocating sustainable and inclusive solutions on a regional scale in collaboration with CAD Headquarters (HQ). Special focus is placed on leveraging International Organization for Migration’s (IOM) expertise and role in the new Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage and access to climate financing and technical support to Member States on National Adaptation Plans (NAP) and National Determination Commitments (NDC) especially for Small Islands Developing States and Least Developed Countries that experience interconnected social, environmental and economic challenges. The CAD RTU also identifies regional opportunities and risks, foster knowledge sharing, encourage policy and research development, and support cross-thematic collaboration internally. Externally, the CAD RTU offers advocacy, policy, and technical programme recommendations to regional entities, Member States, and relevant migration fora, spearheaded by IOM’s Regional Office (RO) and Country Office (CO) leadership. For both IOM teams and partners in the Region, the CAD RTU is the go-to source for climate action and mobility expertise and guidance.
The CAD RTU at RO Middle East and North Africa (MENA) also coordinates Climate Action and Mobility (CAD) related activities for North Africa under the Africa Continental Programme on “Climate Change and Migration Data Programme” with funding from Denmark. The CAD RTU strategically leverages the programme activities to promote the integration of human mobility into national, local and thematic climate change policies, to strengthen the evidence base on climate mobility to inform policies and programmatic interventions, to enhance capacity of government counterparts, stakeholders and youth on climate mobility, and to implement practical solutions to build resilience and adaptive capacity among the affected communities.
Under the overall supervision of the Deputy Regional Director – Operations for Regional Office (RO) MENA, and the direct supervision of the Regional Thematic Specialist for Climate Mobility and Action (CAD RTS) for RO MENA, and in close coordination with the Programme Manager of the “Climate Change and Migration Data Programme” and the Programme Management Team, as well as other relevant RO Units, the Programme Support Officer (Climate Action and Mobility) will support the coordination of CAD related activities for North Africa under the Programme while providing strategic thematic support to the Country Offices (COs) on the integration of human mobility into climate change policies, evidence-building, capacity building, and implementing solutions for the affected communities in alignment with CAD RTU priorities.

For this position, fluency in English is required (oral and written).
Working knowledge of Arabic is highly desirable and/or another official UN language (Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish) is an advantage.
IOM’s official languages are English, French and Spanish.

Internationally recruited professional staff are required to be mobile.
