INTRODUCTION TO GGGI
The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) is a treaty-based international, inter-governmental organization dedicated to supporting and promoting strong, inclusive and sustainable economic growth in developing countries and emerging economies. To learn more please visit about GGGI web page.
The Government of Papua New Guinea (GoPNG) has developed a long-term road infrastructure development program (Connect PNG 2020 – 2040) to promote economic diversification by closing gaps in the primary road network to facilitate growth corridors. The program covers 16,200 km of strategic roads, including priority roads, missing roads, and provincial and district roads identified in the National Road Network Strategy 2018 – 2038, at the cost of PGK 20 billion (approximately USD 5.7 billion) on a rolling 20 year-program. At the same time, the GoPNG is shifting away from business-as-usual development practice towards climate resilient planning in road infrastructure. The GoPNG is on a green pathway which ensures investment planning and decision-making is taken in the most climate-informed way to ensure the infrastructure is climate-proofed in the face of current and projected climate changes and impacts.
The Department of Works and Highways (DoWH), Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) and the Infrastructure Resilience Accelerator Fund (IRAF) through the Infrastructure for Resilient Small Island States – Papua New Guinea (IRIS PNG) Project, is supporting the GoPNG implement its climate resilient planning in road infrastructure by building the technical and institutional capacity to integrate climate risks through capacity building and guidelines and standards enhancement while ensuring relevant stakeholders’ engagement in the process.
