PIH-US accompanies visionary public health and community partners working to build strong, integrated, community-led health systems across the U.S. PIH-US currently supports local health departments, health providers, elected officials, and community leaders to define clear health and racial equity agendas, and provides technical advising and operational support to deliver on those commitments. Our current focus communities include: Montgomery, Alabama; Chicago, Illinois; Immokalee, Florida; Massachusetts; Newark, New Jersey; North Carolina; and Pima County, Arizona. We capture learnings from across this network to mobilize resources, advance policy change, and lay the groundwork for stronger community health systems nationally.
Position Overview
The Project Lead will lead PIH-US’ continued engagement supporting the New Bedford Health Department (NBHD) and other core partners in New Bedford. The Project Lead will design strategy, cultivate and manage relationships with key external partners, and lead project management and implementation related to advancing health equity in New Bedford.
The Project Lead will also continue to establish PIH-US’ presence in the Greater New Bedford area more broadly by identifying and implementing additional areas of support to existing and new partners, continuing to build on the relationship with the NBHD and local community organizations, providing additional technical assistance to the local health departments included in the coalition, sharing learnings with the broader PIH-US Massachusetts and cross-site teams, and contributing to PIH-US Massachusetts’ strategic planning process.
Responsibilities
Provide strategic direction for advancing health equity in the Greater New Bedford area (50%):
- Oversee the strategic planning and implementation of deliverables for PIH-US’ New Bedford work.
- Cultivate collaborative relationships with local community organizations, coalitions, government departments, healthcare providers, and other relevant stakeholders in the Greater New Bedford area.
- Accompany NBHD leadership to design and implement health equity strategies. Work with NBHD staff to design and implement programs to improve health outcomes, including trainings, communication, education, community outreach, research projects, advocacy efforts, and grant writing.
- Manage strategic advising and coordination support to the Health Equity Community of Practice (HECoP) and related working groups. Provide technical assistance and guidance to HECoP leadership committee and partner organizations. Oversee all administrative and logistical components of HECoP convenings.
- Advise local health departments and other stakeholders on programmatic changes based on stakeholder, community, and data-driven feedback with a focus on reaching historically marginalized and vulnerable populations.
- Work alongside the management teams of partner organizations to provide continued mentorship, both in groups and one-on-one, to support professional and personal development for individuals and the teams as a whole.
Expand on the collective vision and community engagement strategies to incorporate community input into the health equity agenda (30%):
- Collaborate with the NBHD and other partners to develop a Community Health Improvement Plan, informed by input from a Community Health Needs Assessment.
- Support expansion of a pilot community health worker program in partnership with local community-based organizations (CBOs).
- Design and implement systems in collaboration with outreach workers to strengthen the quality and accessibility of healthcare and social services provided by partners.
- Meet regularly with CBO leadership to continue building feedback channels from the community and to collaborate on the team’s collective vision for healthcare and social services.
- Work closely with partners and community members to identify gaps in health services and areas for advocacy and policy development.
- Coordinate with social support partners to connect patients to resources that address the social determinants of health.
- Collaborate with partners to write proposals for additional social support systems and other co-fundraising opportunities.
- Organize, coordinate, and attend community events (like discussion groups and food distributions) to provide information about a broad range of health topics with the outreach workers.
- Develop, engage, and maintain strong relationships with key community stakeholders, including healthcare, human service, and CBOs.
Support with the overall expansion of PIH-US Massachusetts (20%):
- Partner with the PIH-US Massachusetts leadership team to design and implement strategic plans.
- Coordinate with the PIH-US Massachusetts and cross-site teams to ensure the work in Greater New Bedford is both benefiting from and contributing to larger PIH-US efforts.
- Identify additional programmatic partners in the Greater New Bedford area; create and implement additional areas of technical assistance and strategic support.
- Partner with the PIH-US leadership team to design and implement strategic planning for PIH-US’ presence in Greater New Bedford and Massachusetts as a whole, including fundraising, budgeting, and hiring strategies. Prepare required grant reports and liaise with grant funders.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in a field related to public health, public policy, management, or social science.
- 8+ years of experience in public health, local government, consulting, and/or community-based program development, management, and administration.
- Advanced degree preferred.
- Knowledge of the public health landscape in Massachusetts.
- Passion for serving the community and promoting health for all; familiarity with the communities being served. Keen ability to build trust with others.
- Demonstrated cultural humility with expertise working with diverse, multi-lingual individuals and communities.
- Demonstrated experience independently and effectively managing and prioritizing a large number of projects simultaneously in a complex and fast-paced organization and setting. Experience managing projects that involve multiple stakeholders and workstreams.
- Experience working flexibly in dynamic, rapidly evolving environments.
- Experience working with external partners in an advisory capacity.
- Excellent strategic thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong diplomatic and interpersonal skills; ability to build strong professional relationships with staff and leadership across a diverse range of departments, organizations, and experience levels.
- Demonstrated experience working to advance social justice and health equity.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including delivery of compelling presentations and documents in Microsoft PowerPoint and Word.
- Ability to work on-site in New Bedford and Boston office regularly.
- Experience in creating and implementing anti-racist approaches to teamwork and with external partners preferred.
- Grant writing and reporting experience preferred.
- Fluency in Spanish, Portuguese, or Cape Verdean Creole preferred.
