Result of Service

The services provided by the consultant are expected to result in an effective participation of CMS (Secretariat and Parties) in the continuation of the Bern process.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Consultant is expected to undertake the following tasks:

Bern process:
¿ seek nominations for the 5 CMS Parties representatives to attend Bern III and start discussions on concrete proposals on how CMS aims to contribute to the implementation of the GBF;
¿ revive and extend the mandate of the WG on the CMS Family inputs to the post-2020 global biodiversity framework (and rename it “the CMS Family WG on the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF)”) which will support the work of the Secretariat and of the 5 CMS Parties representatives in elaborating proposals for Bern III;
¿ convene a meeting of the 5 CMS Parties representatives and the CMS Family WG on the GBF ahead of Bern III to further these proposals.
¿ develop a joint Programme of Work with the CBD Secretariat to collaborate on implementation;
¿ support the integration of CMS priorities in NBSAPs by liaising with UNEP and UNDP, which are leading on GEF projects to support countries revise their NBSAPs;
¿ support the provision of guidance for the implementation of specific GBF targets and participation in the CBD Global Partnership to support the achievement of Target;
¿ exploring possible initiatives and projects with partners for the collaborative implementation of the GBF.

¿ engage with other MEA including in the context of UNEA-6 (26 February to 1 March 2024, Nairobi

Qualifications/special skills

A university degree or equivalent professional qualification in a field related to nature conservation, environmental management, law and policy or other relevant fields, is required.
– A minimum of 20 (twenty) years of working experience in the field of nature conservation and/or policy development is required;
¿ Experience in working with multicultural environments;
¿ Knowledge of and desirably working experience with CMS and/or other biodiversity-related conventions;

Languages

¿ Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of French and/or Spanish is an asset.
