OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST

Under the authority, technical guidance and immediate supervision of the Director and Representative of UNESCO Office in Brazil, the incumbent will carry out the following activities:

Long Description

  • Ensure the conceptualization, design and execution of Brasilia Office’s public information strategy programme and activities as well as guarantee a quality editorial production;
  • Oversee the output of communication vehicles, partnerships and community networking and ensure Brasilia Office carries out appropriate interactions both with the local and international media and other organisations;
  • Manage the communication strategy to increase the awareness and standing of UNESCO, working in close collaboration with the programme and operational teams, other UN agencies, government, media, donors and civil society;
  • Maintain regular contact with the media and press to ensure accuracy of information transmitted and assure the quality of public presentations carried out in the name of UNESCO;
  • Produce journalistic articles, press releases, media advisory and others, for the Director and coordinators of programmatic areas, with their directives and inputs and proceed with the necessary articulations with press editors for publishing;
  • Increase coverage and understanding of UNESCO’s work in the country through development and maintenance of media contacts and providing newsworthy information to the director, programmatic coordinators and programme officers;
  • Develop materials for marketing and awareness-raising including briefing materials and press releases, overseeing their preparation for presentation and ensuring timely, quality information is conveyed;
  • Develop and nurture strategic partnerships with key media organisations – press and broadcast – to pitch UNESCO’s work to the media and respond to subsequent queries from the media;
  • Support the Programme Units in their specific efforts to develop media relations in Brazil, increasing the visibility and publicity of corporate initiatives and awareness of UNESCO mandate and goals;
  • Provide strategic advice to DIR/BRZ to ensure efficient messaging and outreach to the media and the public and assure the maintenance of the organisational image;

Long Description

  • Coordinate and supervise the implementation of UNESCO’s social media strategy, according to the headquarters global strategy, and coordinating with the stakeholders across the Organisation to ensure its effectiveness;
  • Answer demands from Brazilian and foreign journalists about information on different areas of the Organization’s mandate and activities, regarding its documents, conventions and other contents, or about themes where UNESCO’s specialists are considered reference;
  • Ensure the correct and adequate use of UNESCO logo, according to Headquarters’s instructions, in all official BRZ projects communication materials;
  • Collaborate with UN agencies, programmes and funds established in Brazil regarding joint communication activities aiming at spreading common UN values and contents in the country as to maintain the institutional public image;
  • Propose partnerships with media and publication companies aiming at disseminating institutional messages and UNESCO’s ideals to the Brazilian public;
  • Coordinate the elaboration of periodical journalistic clipplings/newsletters about UNESCO’s activities in Brazil;
  • Supervise the publication’s unit, in straight collaboration with the publication’s officer;
  • Plan and supervise the execution of a dissemination strategy for the new UBO publications;
  • Collaborate with Programme coordinators to present publications at open events – seminars, book fairs and conferences – to develop and enhance public awareness;
  • Supervise and ensure the compliance to the Headquarter information strategies, as well as UNESCO Records Management Strategy;
  • Any additional activities that may be required to ensure the success of the work team.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

  • Advanced university degree (Masters or equivalent) in Communication, Media Relations, Journalism or related areas.

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in the field of media relations and communications and interacting with senior officials.

LANGUAGES

  • The position requires proficiency in Portuguese and English.

EDUCATION

  • Specialized training or courses in the fields related to this position.

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Previous experience within the UN System or other international cooperation organizations will be highly valued.

LANGUAGES

  •  Working knowledge of another official UN language, especially Spanish or French will be an asset.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

This assignment is of full-time nature (Monday to Thursday: 8h30 to 12h30 / 14h to 18h; Friday: 8h30 to 14h). For this position, the monthly remuneration, which will be paid in local currency, will be BRL 21.552,34.

The initial contract is intended until the end of 2023 and shall be linked to a project-funding source, which is expected to be renewed. Any contract renewal shall be dependent upon budgetary availability and satisfactory services.
