This position is located in the Division for Gender Affairs (DGA) of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC). The Public Information Assistant reports to the Chief of Division. The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean is one of the five regional Commissions of the United Nations. It was founded in 1948 with the purpose of contributing to the region’s economic and social development. Its mission includes the design, monitoring and evaluation of public policies and the provision of advisory services, expertise and training to Governments, as well as support for regional and international cooperation and coordination activities. Responsibilities
Within delegated authority and depending on location, the Public Information Assistant may be responsible for the following duties: • Provides specialized assistance in the production and delivery of information communications products and services. • Assists in identifying and monitoring key messages. Selects and evaluates a variety of documents, summarize pertinent material, collects, and analyses data and prepares background materials for speeches, studies, briefs and reports. • Researches, extracts and compiles basic information and technical data on specific programmes/projects and related topics and issues. • Researches a broad scope of information sources, printed and electronic; compile and present information for use in the preparation and production of communications products/services for external audiences. • Research and sets up press briefings, press statements, pamphlets or other public awareness campaigns to educate public on gender equality and any specific issue. • Attends a variety of meetings to follow discussions, takes notes and prepares summary report, notes for the file, correspondence, etc. • Serves as an DGA communication focal point in coordination with Public Information Unit of ECLAC on UN activities; • Organizes and executes special events, coordinating with diverse partners and preparing thematic briefings to the media to highlight and publicize key events. • Handles administrative coordination in support of special training and other programmes. • Oversees the preparation of audio and video materials; ensures the good management of the film/video archives, and the proper safekeeping/preservation of historical audio/visual materials. • Assists in the production and editing of video/film projects, radio programmes, or website projects: researches diverse print and electronic information sources for topics and materials for projects; suggests ideas on content, narration texts, audio excerpts, design elements, etc.; selects and catalogues sound/ visual materials and evaluates quality for inclusion in productions,; transcribes audio materials available only on audio format, etc. • Assists in the electronic dissemination of programmes; prepares, maintains and updates web page, to include drafting and editing content; uploads/downs load audio files and maintains file structure. • Identifies and prepares new material for inclusion in appropriate web pages by: researching various information sources for relevant material and cross-checking information with author offices as required; identifying, retrieving and downloading pertinent documentation and other information in requisite programming languages for Web format or inserting into database after determining appropriate categorization; editing documents to conform to UN format, structure and style and preparing new pages, incorporating graphics as needed, using appropriate authoring tools and necessary programming languages; preparing and updating index of documents; posting documents on the UN web and/or development servers and ensuring the appropriate directory location; checking and testing for multiple browser support, etc. • Manages updates and further develops internal databases; update website; generates a variety of standard and non-standard statistical and other reports from various databases. • Provides guidance and training to junior staff. • Assists with the collection and analysis of data as well as preparation of data presentations and reports for information sharing, responding to queries, knowledge management, planning and decision making. • Assists with visualizations and updating information material such as web pages or brochures. • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education
High school diploma or equivalent is required. NOTE: For positions in the General Service category, candidates are required to clearly indicate in their Applicant Profile (AP) relevant information confirming completion of High School.
Job – Specific Qualification
Technical or vocational certificate in Strategic Communication is required.
Work Experience
At least seven years of experience in public communication, international broadcasting or related area is required. Experience in the development, creation, implementation and management of communications is desirable. Experience in public communication in the field of Gender Equality and women’s rights is desirable. 1 year or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat and Spanish is the working language of ECLAC. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written Spanish and English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
