Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Office of the Under-Secretary-General (USG) for the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA). The Public Information Officer reports to the Senior Programme Management Officer and to the Chief of Office, OUSG/DPPA. The Office of the USG DPPA is charged with the overall policy direction, supervision and management of the Department. The Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs focuses primarily on five action areas in international peace and security, ensuring sound analysis and early warning, preventing conflict and engaging in peacemaking, managing political crises and violent conflicts, sustaining peace, and enhancing partnerships. The Department’s mandate is to prevent and resolve conflict through inclusive political solutions.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority and under the supervision of the head of the DPPA strategic communications team, the Public Information Officer may be responsible for the following duties:
• Works in close collaboration with DPPA Divisions to identify information and stories that can convey to different audiences the importance and impact of the Department’s work in innovative, attractive, accessible and polished communications products • Expands departmental promotional and outreach activities, building partnerships relevant to the organization • Drafts complex material for newsletters, periodicals and reports and edits drafts prepared by junior officers and assist in the drafting of speeches and statements • Provides advice and expertise to managers, senior officers and other public information staff on a range of public affairs issues, methods, and approaches; anticipates and resolves communications/public relations issues/problems. • Develops strategic partnerships with key constituencies to elicit support for and maximize impact of promotional objectives; serves as a spokesperson/principal liaison to media organizations, governmental bodies, national groups, private sector organizations, educational organizations, international organizations, etc. • Prepares or oversees preparation of a diverse range of information communications products, including printed and audiovisual promotional materials, media pitches and social media messaging. • Drafts complex material for newsletters, periodicals and reports; edits drafts prepared by junior officers and assists in the drafting of speeches and statements. • Evaluates results and impact of communications activities; reports on developments, trends and attitudes regarding the UN. • Assists in the day-to-day operation of the unit to include participating in coordination of substantive and administrative activities of the unit, interpreting and disseminating policy, providing procedural advice, improving reporting systems, handling operational and administrative queries, preparing budget submissions, establishing and/or coordinating training programmes and monitoring and evaluating results.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, public administration or related area is required. Experience in drafting and editing for publication and in speechwriting is required. Experience in crafting effective thematic information or communications initiatives or campaigns in the areas of peace and security, humanitarian affairs or human rights is required. Experience providing support on strategic communications to a senior official in a front office setting is required Experience working with content for the web is desirable Experience in multimedia production is desirable
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
