Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Digital and Social Media Unit within the Communications and Public Information Section of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), Juba. The incumbent directly reports to the Chief, Communications and Public Information Section.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Public Information Officer (Digital Media Officer) may be responsible for the following duties: Development and implementation of digital and/or social media strategies: • Ensures implementation of digital communications programs and campaigns to publicize priority issues and/or major events, including drafting strategies, coordinating efforts, monitoring and reporting on progress, taking appropriate follow-up action, and analyzing results; • Makes recommendations on the development and delivery of digital media strategies, particularly social media through competitive research, platform determination, benchmarking, messaging and audience identification in line with the United Nations’ mandate and related communications strategies and policies; • Analyses current events, public opinion and media coverage, identifies issues and trends, and advises management on appropriate digital media responses; • Monitors, analyses and evaluates implementation and impact of the Mission’s social media presence; • Keeps abreast of emerging trends and innovations in the digital media field and makes recommendations for new opportunities to expand or enhance the Mission’s social media presence; • Makes recommendations and provides technical advice to team members and other UN components on best practice in digital media; • Provides guidance to and supervises junior staff. Oversight of content creation and management of digital channels: • Manages UNMISS digital and social media platforms, including the mission website, photo, audio and video channels; • Coordinates the production and publishing of daily content (text, images, video or HTML) that supports and engages audiences in a meaningful way; • Works with communications colleagues and other UNMISS components to ensure full coverage of the Mission’s activities and the generation of new content; • Ensures consistent messaging, quality control and a coherent user experience across UNMISS digital platforms; • Captures and analyses appropriate social data/metrics, insights and best practices to support continuous improvement. Engagement and partnerships: • Monitors a range of external forums and social media and maintains UNMISS presence in public dialogue where appropriate; • Works with staff to engage online audiences through social media platforms; • Manages social media communication with supporters and interested parties, building relationships with existing supporters and influencers to build the UNMISS brand; • Develops relationships with key partners to maximize visibility and traffic to UNMISS platforms and to maximise the distribution of content; • Makes recommendations to increase the visibility of Mission’s social media content. – Performs other related duties as required.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience
A minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, public administration or related area, including at least (3) three years of dedicated experience managing digital channels (website and/or social media) in a professional context is required. Experience delivering digital campaigns, including advocacy and engagement is required. Experience working on issues related to peace and conflict is required. At least one (1) year of experience working in conflict, post-conflict or developing country is desirable. Experience monitoring and evaluating the impact of web and social media content is desirable. Experience managing multilingual content is desirable. At least one (1) year of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Working knowledge of an additional UN official language is desirable.
