Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Front Office of the Office of the Under-Secretary-General (OUSG) of the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT), at Headquarters in New York. The incumbent will report to the Public Information Officer (P-4) and the Chief of Front Office (P5).
Organizational Setting and Reporting Relationships: The United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) was established by the General Assembly in June 2017. The Office has five main functions: (a) provide leadership on the General Assembly counter-terrorism mandates across the United Nations System; (b) enhance coordination and coherence across the 46 UN Global Counter-Terrorism Coordination Compact entities to ensure the balanced implementation of the four pillars of the Strategy; (c) strengthen the delivery of United Nations counter-terrorism capacity-building assistance to Member States; (d) improve visibility, advocacy and resource mobilization for United Nations counter-terrorism efforts; and (e) ensure that due priority is given to counter-terrorism across the United Nations System and that the important work on preventing violent extremism is firmly rooted in the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Public Information Officer will be responsible for the following duties:
• Ensures implementation of information programs online and offline to publicize priority issues and/or major events, to include visibility and branding, coordinating efforts, monitoring and reporting on progress, taking appropriate follow-up action, and analyzing the outcome.
• Monitors and analyzes traffic on the website and social media, identifies issues and trends, and advises management on appropriate action/response in order to increase the online presence of UNOCT and ensures that content on the UNOCT/UNCCT website is accurate and up to date.
• Produces, designs or oversees production of a specific type or types (e.g. print, broadcast, etc.) of information communications products (e.g. press kits, press releases, feature articles, speeches, booklets, brochures, backgrounders, audio-visual materials, social media assets and material for the website, etc.), to include proposing topics, undertaking research, determining appropriate medium and target audience, preparing production plans, writing drafts, obtaining clearances and finalizing texts, editing copy, and coordinating design approval, printing procedures and distribution.
• Prepares designs and reviews on the basis of official UN documentation and other sources, initial drafts of articles or chapters for inclusion in UN newsletters, periodicals, reports and social media material and website.
• Provides secretariat support to the UNOCT/UNCCT Communications Focal Points Working Group as requested.
• Initiates and sustains professional relationships with key constituencies.
• Acts as focal point on specific issues, monitoring and reporting on developments, responding to inquiries, etc. related to the website, social media and branding.
• Participates in selecting the information transmitted to key constituencies
• Provides guidance to, and may supervise, more junior staff.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communications, graphic design, journalism, public information or related field. A first-level university degree in the related area in combination with an additional two years of relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, graphic design or related area is required.
Experience in organizing public information campaigns using social media platforms is required.
Experience in graphic design using Adobe Creative Cloud programmes is required.
Work in the field of peace and security is desirable.
Experience providing social media support to senior leadership in an international organization for speaking engagements is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position(s) advertised, fluency in both oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
Special Notice
• This position is funded through extra budgetary resources and is temporarily available for an initial period of 6 months with the possibility of extension. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.
